How Do We Define Tonsillar Hypertrophy?

Tonsillar hypertrophy is a term given to an unusually enlarged tonsillar tissue. Severe cases of tonsillar Hypertrophy can result in swallowing and breathing difficulties. When this usually large tonsillar tissue starts to become a persistent problem, then the physician may advise a surgical procedure called tonsillectomy in order to remove the excess tissue that is formed.

Causes of Tonsillar Hypertrophy

Tonsillar Hypertrophy may be found in some people at the time of birth, but the main cause of Tonsillar Hypertrophy is generally an infection of tonsils or the tissues surrounding it. The infections which generally cause Tonsillar Hypertrophy are mainly of three types:

  • Acute Tonsillitis
  • Chronic Tonsillitis
  • Peritonsillar Abscess.

Other infections which may contribute to Tonsillar Hypertrophy are bacterial or viral infections caused by Streptococcus Bacteria or the Epstein-Barr virus.

Symptoms Of Tonsillar Hypertrophy

There are many symptoms with which we can identify Tonsillar Hypertrophy like in Tonsillar Hypertrophy, the tissues get swollen which may result in subtle changes in voice of the individual. Other symptoms, which an affected individual can experience is an extremely bad breath which is due to infected tissues. Snoring is also a symptom of Tonsillar Hypertrophy. An affected individual may also experience sleep apnea or impaired sleep cycle. Some of the other symptoms of Tonsillar Hypertrophy are painful swallowing, decreased appetite, frequent ear infections.

Treatment For Tonsillar Hypertrophy

If Tonsillar Hypertrophy is not treated appropriately then it may lead to other potentially serious health issues like the infection causing Tonsillar Hypertrophy may spread to other parts of throat and neck. It may also result in blockage of the airway passage. In the case of Tonsillar Hypertrophy being caused by Streptococcus Bacteria, there may be some damage to the kidneys or the heart valves in some cases. Pneumonia can also be a complication if Tonsillar Hypertrophy is left untreated.

To treat Tonsillar Hypertrophy, medication and surgical procedures are used. Antibiotics are used to treat the underlying infection causing Tonsillar Hypertrophy. If he tonsillar Hypertrophy gets chronic or severe, then a surgical procedure called tonsillectomy is performed to treat the condition.
