Why Should You Use Alternative or Complementary Therapies?

While they can’t replace conventional medicine, more people are turning to complementary treatment options for various reasons. For instance, more than half of people diagnosed with cancer use complementary therapies at some point in their illness. Unlike western treatment interventions, alternative remedies take a holistic approach to healing. Even though studies evaluating the effectiveness of complementary therapies remain inconclusive, some alternative remedies, such as chiropractic services, have been widely accepted and used by patients and caregivers. Below are some benefits of using alternative therapies.

1. It Helps Patients Feel Better

There is no proof that complementary therapies can heal or cure diseases. However, various complementary remedies, such as acupuncture, cupping, and chiropractic care, can help patients feel better, especially those struggling with terminal illnesses. Nearly all complementary therapies focus on reducing stress and promoting relaxation. With the help of trained service providers, they can:

  • Relieve Anxiety
  • Improve general health and well-being
  • Calm emotions

2. Boosts the Immune System

Complementary remedies are also thought to boost the immune system and help the body fight several health issues, including cancer. These remedies help patients feel good and alleviate stress. Improved well-being and reduced stress naturally boost the body’s immune system.

3. Natural and Healing Therapy

The increasing popularity of complementary remedies is partly because they are natural and non-toxic. Using natural treatment options appeals to many patients, especially those suffering from the side effects of conventional medicine. However, this doesn’t mean complementary therapies have no side effects. Some can interact and interfere with conventional therapies, such as cancer drugs.

4. Feeling of Being in Control

Doctors are the main decision-makers in conventional therapies. Doctors make a diagnosis, suggest the best treatment plan, and recommend follow-up. Patients are only required to follow the doctors’ directions, which doesn’t sit well with some of them. Some patients prefer complementary therapies because they have some control over what’s happening. Alternative treatment is more of a partnership between the patient and the therapist.

5. Alleviates Symptoms

There’s a growing body of evidence that some complementary remedies alleviate symptoms of various health conditions like cancer. These therapies can also reduce the side effects of conventional drugs. For instance, acupuncture reduces the side effects of chemotherapy drugs. Acupuncture also relieves pain and sore mouth after head and neck cancer treatment.

6. Safe and Effective

Most complementary therapies have been evaluated and found to be generally safe. Alternative therapies like yoga, acupuncture, and meditation don’t have notable side effects. However, this doesn’t clear all complementary therapies from the possibility of causing side effects. While they are natural remedies, they aren’t entirely safe. Some interventions use botanicals and nutritional products which haven’t been approved by the FDA. They are also not regulated, and patients don’t need a prescription to buy them.

Endnote

Alternative therapies have been part of the healing industry for decades. The benefits of these therapies have created a massive wave of interest that won’t decline soon. While they may be considered unorthodox, alternative medicine has several unique benefits that western or conventional therapies can’t achieve.
