I hope the diagnosis was made following MRI or CT scan studies. The treatment depends on symptoms and size of herniation. Asymptomatic disc herniation may not need any treatment beyond some conservative treatment like stretching. Symptomatic disc hernia are treated with physical therapy and cortisone injection in most cases. If non-surgical treatment fails then in most cases removal of herniated disc is performed as discectomy. Recovery period following discectomy is 3 to 4 weeks.
