Chronic pancreatitis causes severe pain because of spilling of pancreatic secretions over surrounding tissue resulting in tissue necrosis (death of cells and tissue) and irritation of nerves. The treatment includes pain management with cortisone injection, opioids or adjuvant pain medication. The blockade of flow of pancreatic secretion is treated with surgery and ERCP. Patient suffering with chronic pancreatitis may need opioid therapy for several months, which may result in dependence and addiction to opioids. Chronic pancreatitis, which does not respond to any treatment, may be treated with intrathecal pain medication. Treatment for Chronic Pancreatitis involves placement of catheter next to spinal cord in cerebrospinal fluid and catheter is connected to programmable pump, which delivers pain medication.
