10 Foods To Avoid If You Have Joint Pain or Arthritis

  1. Avoid Red and Processed Meat: American Journal of Clinical Nutrition research study has revealed a link between red meat and inflammation markers. So, replace the red and processed meat with fruits and vegetables. Both the red and processed meats contain chemical purine and nitrite that can worsen your joint pain or arthritis.
  2. Avoid Sugar: Medical experts warn that processed sugars often trigger the release of inflammatory messengers called as cytokines. Sugar may worsen your joint pain. Sugar is known by many names such as fructose or sucrose etc ending with “ose”. Avoid the foods that contain these ingredients.
  3. Saturated Fats Can Worsen Joint Pain: Saturated fats trigger adipose inflammation, which worsens joint inflammation. Pizza, burger and cheese are the highest sources of saturated fats in an average American diet.
  4. Trans Fats: Trans fats can trigger systemic inflammation, which can be found in fast foods, fried products, frozen breakfast products, crackers, and cookies. Patients of Arthritis should avoid foods with partially hydrogenated oils in the ingredient labels.
  5. Omega 6 Fatty Acids Can Worsen Arthritis: The human body needs a healthy balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Excessive consumption of omega-6s can worsen the arthritis. These fatty acids are contained in oils such as corn, safflower, sunflower, soy, peanut, and vegetables.
  6. Refined Carbohydrates: White rice, white flour products, white potatoes and many cereals are refined carbohydrates. These refined carbohydrate foods fuel the production of advanced glycation end products that worsen joint pain or stimulate inflammation.
  7. Avoid Mono-sodium glutamate If You Have Joint Pain: Mono-sodium glutamate (MSG) is a flavor-enhancing food additive commonly utilized in fast foods, prepared soups and soup mixes, deli meats and salad dressings. This chemical can trigger joint inflammation or joint pain.
  8. Avoid Gluten: If you are sensitive to gluten, which is found in wheat, barley and rye, or casein, dairy products, you should avoid them when suffering from joint pain or arthritis.
  9. Avoid Aspartame If You Have arthritis: Aspartame is a non-nutritive and intense artificial sweetener used in high number of products worldwide. Although it is approved by the FDA, your immune system may repel to the “foreign substance” by resisting the chemical, which may in return worsen your arthritis.
  10. Alcohol: Alcohol drinking damages liver function and weakens other multi-organ interactions and can cause inflammation and arthritis pain. It is best removed or used in less amounts.
