What is Biokinesiology?

The study of human movement during the course of lifespan is known as Biokinesiology. Biokinesiology combines the study of motion at the cellular, molecular, systems and organ level and gives the students an exceptional, interdisciplinary view of the biological source of normal and abnormal motions.

Based upon the study of motion science and kinesiology, biokinesiology aims at understanding movement using physical therapy towards rehabilitating patients having disorders which affect their movement.

Biokinesiology is of interdisciplinary nature and integrates the following sciences:

  • Biomechanics.
  • Exercise Sciences.
  • Motor Behavior/Motor Control.
  • Motor Development.

What Are the Principles of Biolinesiology?

There Are Three Elementary Principles In Biokinesiology:

  1. The quality of life and overall health of an individual depends on one’s capacity to move efficiently and skillfully.
  2. Biokinesiology tries to understand the way certain biological mechanisms help in controlling movement and is important for developing improved ways for treating disorders affecting movement of an individual.
  3. Biokinesiology is developed on the understanding that human beings use motion skills to achieve goals and importance is given on recognizing the role behavior plays in treatment.

Master of Science (MS) in Biokinesiology

The Master of Science in Biokinesiology is a program that teaches the graduates to be research scientists in the field of Biokinesiology. Graduates in MS carry out basic or clinical research, commonly under the guidance of a primary investigator. The beliefs of the MS in the biokinesiology discipline is that graduates will be taught to carry out interdisciplinary and collaborative research, which requires their ability to be aware in all the areas of biokinesiology along with conceptualizing research questions through various stages of analysis. The curriculum maintains a balance between imparting students with a wide exposure to the various disciplines within biokinesiology and teaching students the higher skills necessary to surpass in a specialized area. Students in MS are also taught specialized research skill by finishing a project in the laboratories of the biokinesiology program.
