A Gynaecologist is strictly devoted to the reproductive care of women. It can rather be said, Gynaecologist is a doctor who specializes in the medical care of women and their reproductive system including vagina, ovaries, uterus etc.
However, Obstetrician is concerned with women while pregnancy and also a little after pregnancy. Obstetrician is a doctor who specializes in the surgical care of women and their babies during and after childbirth.

Gynaecologist deals with mammograms and pap smear, vaginal or uterine infections, tubal ligations and hysterectomies, fertility issues and contraception etc. They confirm the pregnancy and then transfer the case to obstetrician.
Obstetrician looks after women with pregnancy and also takes care of childbirth and post natal or post partum care of the women. Obstetrician performs regular ultrasounds, especially during the 1st trimester, at 12th week and at the 20th week of pregnancy for determining health status of the foetus, for indentifying any complications and also for determining gestational period.

Gynaecologist performs the typical surgical procedures like hysterectomy, tubal ligation, oophorectomy, laproscopy, laprotomy, cystoscopy etc.
However, Obstetrician perform vaginal and caesarean deliveries, episiotomy etc.

Gynaecologist treats cancer of reproductive organs like uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, vagina, cervix, vulva etc. They also treat infertility, incontinence, dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, menorrhagia, fungal, protozoal or bacteria infections, etc.
However, Obstetrician does not treat diseases. They only deal with any complication while childbirth like, Ectopic pregnancy, pre-eclampsia, fetal distress, shoulder dystocia, placental abruption, uterine rupture, obstetrical hemorrhage, sepsis, prolapsed cord etc.
