Can Hair Dye Cause Hair Loss?

Can Hair Dye Cause Hair Loss?

The presence of a number of strong chemicals in the hair dye for coloring the hair can actually cause major damage to the hair. On regular use, this damage due to hair dye use can cause major hair loss.

Major Ingredients in Hair Dyes

Two types of hair dyes are popular in the market – Permanent and Semi-permanent hair dyes. Depending on how long a hair dye stays on your hair these specifications are made. Naturally, there are some differences in the ingredients in these two categories of hair dyes. However, almost all kinds of hair dyes contain ammonia and hydrogen peroxide. Apart from that following are some chemicals that could be found in hair dyes:

  • Parabens
  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)
  • Resorcinol
  • Para Phenyl Diamine (PPD)
  • Toluene – 2, 5 Diamine (TD)
  • Toluene – 2, 5 Diamine Sulfate (TDS)

How Does a Hair Dye Work?

Both permanent and semi-permanent hair dyes penetrate deep inside the hair and make some characteristic changes in it. Ammonia swells up the hair cuticles and forms passage for the dye to pass inside the hair easily. Hydrogen Peroxide bleaches the natural hair color and releases oxygen to promote chemical reaction inside the hair. In presence of oxygen, the above-mentioned chemicals react giving an expected hair color. In a permanent hair dye, this overall process takes place more vigorously. So, there are basically three steps in a hair dying process:

  • Ammonia works to open up the cuticles or breaks down the outer layer of the hair cuticles.
  • Hydrogen peroxide bleaches the hair and releases oxygen allowing the dye to react for a long time.
  • Other chemicals embed everywhere in a hair through a number of reactions in presence of oxygen.

Hair Dyes Weaken The Hair From Every Aspect

It is evident from the above discussion that a drastic change takes place each time you dye your hair. The most damage is done by ammonia which directly reacts on the scalp and weakens the roots. Other chemicals including hydrogen peroxide weaken the inter-molecular bonds exist among the natural ingredients present inside a hair. There are many other ill-effects of these chemicals. So, on regular use of a hair dye, your hair may start falling in leaps and bounds.

Conclusion

There are some hair dyes in the market that do not use ammonia. These hair dyes normally use ethanolamine which works in the same process as ammonia. You need to keep in mind that occasional use of hair dye is not so harmful. People who use it regularly may face problems like hair loss and breakage of hair. Hair dying under the supervision of an expert can reduce the ill-effects of hair dyes to some extent.
