How Effective is Flonase & What are it’s Side Effects?

There are certain medical conditions where the intake of flonase is not recommended. These conditions include diabetes, herpes simplex viral infection in eyes, liver disorder, cataract or glaucoma or when you are planning to have surgery in nose or throat. Flonase is basically a brand that sells fluticasone nasal spray. Fluticasone prevents the release of a substance such as prostaglandins that are responsible for causing inflammation in nose. It helps in managing the inflammation and itching. Fluticasone falls in a special category of medicines known as corticosteroids.

Flonase is a nasal spray that is effectively used to clear off congestion in nose. Flonase basically works by preventing the release of substance that leads to congestion and inflammation. • If you do not see any response even after regular usage, seek your doctor’s advice instead of increasing the dosage.
• Avoid spraying it close to your eyes or mouth.
• If you notice any type of allergic reaction after using Flonase, contact your doctor immediately.

Flonase spray may lead to certain side effects such as swelling in throat, nose, tongue and lips, difficulty in breathing, hives etc. Report any signs of side-effects immediately and seek proper treatment or advice.

Some of the common side effects of Flonase that can occur in an individual who is not taking any other medication and lies in the age group of 18- 60 years are as follows:

• Itching on the inner lining of the nose, bleeding, headache, nausea and sore throat are some of the common symptoms.
• It can also make it harder for the wounds to heal that can take longer time. Thus, you must not be using this drug if you have undergone a nasal trauma or nasal surgery recently.
• A person taking Flonase also carries an increased risk of cataracts and glaucoma. You must use the dosage strictly as prescribed by your doctor. Avoid spraying it close to your eye.
• The intake of flonase also makes you an easy prey to infections like chickenpox and viral infection.
• If Flonase is used for a long time in children, the physical growth can get hampered.
• People who are already having certain medication conditions such as active infection, allergy, certain eye problems and weak immune system must not take this drug.

Flonase is an effective medication for managing symptoms of rhinitis but it can also lead to certain side effects such as bleeding of nose. The drug takes about 3 days to show its full effect in the body of an individual.
