Lumigan otherwise known as bimatoprost is a medicine used to effectively reduce pressure in the eyes. This is done by increasing the fluid amount that drains from the eyes.

Lumigan or bimatoprost is an eye drop or ophthalmic solution which is used in the effective treatment of open-angle glaucoma and other conditions that causes increased pressure in the eyes.

Lumigan or bimatoprost might cause a small color change in your lashes, eyelids or eyes also it might also increase the growth of your eyelash thickness. These small changes which are gradual increase in the brown pigment would occur slowly that you might not even notice them for years or months. There are chances of the color changes being long term even after the completion of your treatment and will occur only on the treated eye. This color difference will result in differences in eyelash or eye from one eye to the other.

It is important to ensure the tip of lumigan or bimatoprost dropper not touching any surface of your hands or eyes. This is because the dropper might get contaminated which might cause eye infection leading or serious damage or vision loss.

You will need to wait for a minimum of 5 minutes at least after using lumigan or bimatoprost to use any other eye drop your doctor might have advised to use.
It is important to follow all the instructions mentioned in the label and medicine package. Also you must also tell all the health care providers treating you about all the medical condition you suffer and all the medicines you are using at the moment.

Prior to Taking Lumigan

If you have any allergic reactions to lumigan or bimatoprost, do not use this medicine. You must tell your doctor if you have any of these problems before starting treatment to make lumigan or bimatoprost safe for you

  • Infection or swelling of eyes
  • Uveitis – an eye condition
  • If you are planning to become pregnant or pregnant at the time of treatment inform your doctor, as it is unknown if it will harm the unborn child.
  • If you are breast feeding your child inform your doctor as it is unknown if lumigan passes through breast milk and harm the child.
  • Lumigan or bimatoprost is not to be given to anyone below 16 years of age.

How to Use Lumigan?

Lumigan or bimatoprost must be used only as prescribed your doctor. It is important to follow all the instructions on the label and do not use this medicine in any smaller or larger amount or when not needed anymore.

  • Lumigan or bimatoprost is better to be used in the evenings unless your doctor tells otherwise

  • It is important to wash and clean your hands before you use lumigan or bimatoprost.
  • In order to apply lumigan or bimatoprost eye drops
  • First step – Slowly tilt your head and pull down lower eyelid and hold the dropper right above the eye and tip down. You need to look away from the dropper and squeeze a drop.
  • Right after applying the solution, keep your eyes closed for the next 2-3 minutes without squinting or blinking your eye. Also, you must slowly press the inside corner of your eye with your finger for around a minute to prevent the solution dripping out of your tear duct.
  • You must only drop as many as mentioned by your doctor. In case you are using additional drop, make sure you have a 5 minutes interval between the two.
  • If you are using any other eye drop then you must wait for another 10 minutes to apply the next eye solution
  • It is important to ensure the tip of lumigan or bimatoprost dropper not touching any surface of your hands or eyes. This is because the dropper might get contaminated which might cause eye infection leading or serious damage or vision loss.
  • If you see any particles in the eye drops or any color changes, do not use it anymore. Get a new medicine from your pharmacist.
  • Lumigan or bimatoprost has to be stored at room temperature or in a refrigerator especially away from heat and moisture. Do not freeze the medicine and make sure the bottle cap is closed tightly when not used.

In case you have any eye infection or eye injury or even if you are about to have any eye surgery, inform your doctor

What is the Suggested Dosage of Lumigan?

  • Lumigan or Bimatoprost Treatment for Intraocular Hypertension, Glaucoma (Open Angle) – General Adult Dosage
  • One time in the evening daily – 1 drop in the affected eye
  • Lumigan or Bimatoprost Treatment for Intraocular Hypertension, Glaucoma (Open Angle) – General pediatric Dosage
  • Anyone above 16 years of age: One time in the evening daily – 1 drop in the affected eye

What are the Side Effects of Lumigan?

If you have any symptoms of allergic reaction to this medicine such as swelling of lips, throat, face or tongue, difficulty in breathing, hives then get immediate help.

You must stop using lumigan or bimatoprost and get immediate help if you have the below severe side effects:

  • Vision changes
  • High sensitivity to light
  • Discharge or oozing from the affected eye
  • Swelling, redness, pain or itching around or in your eye.
