What Do We Mean By Having A Hole In The Bladder?

The bladder is a reservoir for urine in the body. When in a relaxed state with no urine present it resembles the shape of a pear. It has muscle tissues which have the ability to expand and contract when urine fills in the bladder. The urine is made in the kidney which is then transported to the bladder. Once urine starts filling the bladder the muscle tissues start expanding. When the bladder is full with urine the muscles tissues start contracting and pass the urine to the urethra from where it is disposed out of the body.

Normally there is no opening in the bladder except for an opening which connects it to the bowel. However, sometimes due to a penetrating injury such as a gunshot or a stabbing wound the bladder walls tend to rupture resulting in a hole in the bladder.

An individual with a hole in the bladder will have persistent difficult to treat urinary tract infection, or will have a foul smelling urine, or passing of gas through the urethra while urinating.
