Is It Good Or Bad To Have An Oily Skin?

Oily skin has its own set of advantages and disadvantages. However, it is important that you have the knowledge of how to care for the skin when your oil glands are producing excess oil.

Is It Good Or Bad To Have An Oily Skin?

What Leads To An Oily Skin?

Our skin contains oil glands, which produce sebum (a natural skin lubricant or a moisturizer), which help keep the skin moisturized. Overactive oil glands lead to an excess of sebum production, which accumulates, making the skin feel thick, heavy and greasy to look at.

Advantages & Disadvantages of Oily Skin: Is Oily Skin Good or Bad?

It is not actually bad to have oily skin if you can take proper care of it. There are various advantages to the people who have oily skin such as:

  • Sebum produced by the oil gland is rich in vitamin E, which is a strong antioxidant. Vitamin E provides protection against free radicals and also various anti-inflammatory benefits.
  • Sebum (oil) is a natural moisturizer, which forms a barrier and prevents water loss and keeps the skin hydrated.
  • Due to the antioxidant and moisturizing properties of sebum, an oily skin ages slowly. The appearance of fine line and wrinkles is delayed and are not obvious in oily skin.
  • The sebum in oily skin also protects the skin against pollution, wind and sun.

There are certain disadvantages of having oily skin such as:

  • Oily skin is prone to acne and clogged pores due to the high sebum levels. But it is not necessary that anyone with oily skin will surely have acne or someone with dry skin will never have acne.
  • An oily face turns greasy very fast. A person with oily skin cannot go all throughout the day without washing their face.
  • Finding a perfect sunscreen is also a problem with oily skinned people. Most of the sunscreens feel heavy or clog the pores when applied on a oily skin.
  • People with oily skin also have trouble finding the perfect make-up, which would not streak or smudge.
  • Oily skin has far better advantages than the disadvantages. It is just that you just need to know how to take proper care of oily skin.

How To Care For An Oily Skin?

  • Oil content varies in different people, so does the skin care regimen. You just need to be careful so that you do not strip off the extra oil from the skin making it dry, which again has its own set of pros and cons.
  • Caring for oily skin needs a cleanser which is gentle, and won’t strip off the excess oil out from your skin
  • Wash your face two times in a day to keep the skin pores clean and unclogged and to reduce the shine on the oily skin.
  • Scrub the face only once in a week if you have oily skin.
  • Get facials which are especially designed for oily skin.
  • Use oil control blotting paper when wearing makeup for long hours on oily skin.

Whichever product you choose for your oily skin, make sure that the one you use does not take away the natural oils completely from your skin, as the advantages of oily skin are long term. Do not overdo anything to remove the excess oil or use harsh chemicals thinking they will be okay to use on oily skin.

The Verdict: Is It Good or Bad To Have An Oily Skin?

It is safe to say that having an oily skin is not exactly a bad thing to have; but only if you know how to maintain and manage the oily skin. If proper skin care routine designed specifically for oily skin is not followed, then it can be a nightmare to have an oily skin. Make sure you understand how to properly treat your oily skin; and it’s guaranteed that you will only enjoy the benefits of having oily skin with the unpleasant side effects of oily skin taken care of by your correct skin care routine.
