How Can We Prevent Kidney Failure?

Kidney failure will affect the body’s capability to clean the blood, filter additional presence of water in the blood, and control blood pressure (B.P). There are two kidneys sitting on either side of the spine just above the waist. With the damage of kidney, it becomes difficult for the body to process out the waste, which in turn accumulates within the body. Due to this, you will notice swelling, poor sleep, weakness, shortness of breath, and vomiting. An attending to the situation will make it worse, and the kidneys eventually fail to work. Such a scenario is life-threatening:

Function of Kidneys

Kidneys help in:

  1. Keeping balance of minerals such as potassium, phosphorus, sodium, and water in blood
  2. Removal of waste from bled after dietician, muscle activity, medications, and exposure to chemicals
  3. Produce renin, which is helpful in managing blood pressure
  4. Production of erythropoietin, a compound that is helpful in generation of red blood cells
  5. Creating an active form of vitamin D, this is essential for bone health and other natural chemical formation.

Chronic Kidney Disease

Chronic kidney disease occurs initially when one or both the kidneys stop working for more than three months. One may or may not have symptoms during this stage. However, it is also the period during which it is possible for the doctor to cure and prevent kidney failure. High blood pressure (B.P) and diabetes are the common symptoms that promote failure of kidneys.

How Can We Prevent Kidney Failure?

To avoid the occurrence of kidney failure or chronic kidney disease, you have to concentrate on two critical conditions – lowering high blood pressure (B.P) and keeping away from the occurrence of diabetes. These two are the most significant culprits of kidney failure.

Many people suffer from high blood pressure (B.P) and diabetes. However, they do not know it. If there has been a long interval for your last routine checkup, it is preferable to schedule one to check for the presence of diabetes and blood pressure. If the results are positive for either of the condition, then it is time to bring the situation under control to prevent any damage to the kidneys. Remember that an increase in blood sugar level or diabetes will cause wear-and-tear of the blood vessels in the kidney, leading to failure of the kidneys.

A few things are helpful in keeping down both diabetes and blood pressure (B.P) in the minimum levels. You can follow a healthy diet, quit smoking, limit or keep away from alcohol, include exercises in daily routine, and consuming medicines as prescribed by the doctor is helpful in preventing kidney failure. In addition to this, if there is a history of kidney problems, blood pressure (B.P), and diabetes running in the family, then it is essential to carry out regular tests to ensure that the kidneys are functioning appropriately. The tests include:

  1. Urine test – it shows the presence of protein, sugar, and blood content in the urine
  2. Blood pressure readings – it will display the readings of blood pressure (B.P) and help you understand whether it is high or low
  3. Fasting blood glucose – it helps in measuring the blood sugar when you have not eaten for several hours
  4. Hemoglobin a1c – the test is helpful in determining the presence of diabetes and will show you the average blood sugar level for the last two or three months
  5. Creatinine – the test is helpful in measuring the waste produced by muscle activity, which increases when the kidneys are functioning inappropriately.

Learning about the presence of kidney disease in early-stage using the tests will prevent kidney failure.
