What Is The Best Treatment For Oral Thrush & Why Does It Keep Coming Back?

Oral thrush is also known as oral candidiasis and it is a condition, where the fungus called Candida albicans accumulates on the mouth lining of a patient. Candida is a regular organism present in your mouth but in some cases, it overgrows and causes various other symptoms. The problem of oral thrush or oral candidiasis may create creamy or white-colored lesions often on your inner cheeks and tongue. In some cases, the thrush may spread to the roof area of your mouth, your tonsils or gums or at the back area of your throat.

What Is The Best Treatment For Oral Thrush?

In most cases, doctors recommend the following oral medications for the treatment of oral thrush.

  • Fluconazole is a type of oral antifungal medication and is the basic medicine available for every age group.
  • Clotrimazole antifungal medicine, which is available in the form of a lozenge
  • Nystatin is a type of antifungal mouthwash, which you have to swab in the mouth of your baby or swish in your mouth.
  • Itraconazole is an oral type of antifungal medication used primarily for the treatment of people, who fail to respond to any other treatment available to cure oral thrush. Besides, oral medication is helpful for all individuals suffering from HIV Aids.
  • If a patient has oral thrush in its severe form, doctors may recommend the medication of amphotericin B.(3)

Along with the aforementioned medications, doctors may recommend a few of the over-the-counter probiotic pills or therapies. A few of the doctors also recommend active-culture drinks with lacto bacilli and acid ophilus to help you in the restoration of friendly bacteria in your mouth and the digestive tract. These are perfect when the oral thrush comes to its mild form after you use various antibiotics for different purposes.(4)

Why Does Oral Thrush Keep Coming Back?

Even though a large number of patients may get relief from oral thrush via medication and other essential over-the-counter therapies, a few patients may have recurring thrush i.e. coming back of oral thrush. Repetition of oral thrush may take place because of many reasons, which include-

  • Pregnancy
  • Wearing of synthetic underwear or clothes
  • Wearing tight clothes
  • Usage of various oral products, which may irritate your mouth or gum’s areas, like bubble bath, perfumed shower gel, and deodorants
  • Chemotherapy
  • Intake of certain antibiotics
  • Uncontrolled form of diabetes
  • HIV aids and related disorders of the immune system
  • Failure to complete a treatment course of oral thrush
  • Irregular menstrual cycle
  • Changes in hormonal pH (5)

Even though oral thrush may affect every individual, it usually takes place in old adults and babies, as they have less immunity. Alternatively, the problem may take place in other individuals, who have suppressed immune systems or specific healthcare conditions or people intake specific medications. Accordingly, oral thrush will be a minor problem if you stay healthy. However, if your immune system is weak, you may experience severe symptoms and are often difficult to control.(1)

White-colored and slightly raised areas in the mouth are few of the common signs of oral thrush. These are usually present on your inner cheeks and tongue. However, in some cases, white-colored lesions or thrush may appear on the roof of your gums, mouth, tonsils and back area of the throat. These lesions may sometimes cause pain and slight bleeding while you brush or floss your teeth and scrape. Along with this, if you deal with the poor situation, lesions may spread in your esophagus area to cause-

  • Difficulty in swallowing your food or pain whenever you swallow the food
  • The feeling of stuck of your food items in the throat or the mid area of your chest
  • If the infection or thrush spreads beyond your esophagus you may experience fever.(2)
