Damage to the nerves is medically termed as Neuropathy. The nervous system of the body is classified into two parts the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. In majority of the cases, it is the nerves in the peripheral nervous system that get damaged and hence Neuropathy is also termed as Peripheral Neuropathy.
The peripheral nerves connect the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body to include the hands, legs, face, and other internal organs. The peripheral nerves are responsible for an individual having the perception of pain, facial expressions, and reflexes.
Neuropathy in majority of the cases is caused due to diabetes, although certain other systemic illnesses, injuries, or infection. What Does Neuropathy In Your Feet Feel Like?
An individual with neuropathy will experience numbness, tingling, and a burning sensation in the feet which may radiate up the legs. The individual may also experience a sharp throbbing pain in the feet which may also be radiating. The individual is likely to be hypersensitive with even slightest of touch in the feet causing pain.
The gait of the affected individual will also get affected due to neuropathy and the individual may have increased incidences of falling and lack of coordination. In case if the motor nerves get affected then there may be partial or complete paralysis of the lower extremities.
It is highly recommended that an individual seek emergent medical care if he or she experiences tingling, weakness, or pain in the feet and experiences an alteration of sensation in the feet as this may require medical attention to identify a cause for the neuropathy and formulate a treatment plan.
