What is the Suggested Dosage of Hydroxyzine?

Adult Dosage of Hydroxyzine for Treating Anxiety:

Oral: Take hydroxyzine between 50 to 100 milligrams four times in one day.

IM: Take hydroxyzine between 50 to 100 milligrams at once, then every 4 to 6 hours as required.

Oral: Gives indicative reprieve of tension and anxiety linked with psychoneurosis which is an additional therapy in organic disease conditions in which anxiety is evident.

IM: For emotional emergencies and psychiatric therapy including severe alcoholism.

Adult Dosage of Hydroxyzine for Treating Pruritus:

Oral: Take hydroxyzine 25 milligrams three or four times daily.

For controlling pruritus caused by allergic reactions like chronic atopic and urticaria as well as contact dermatoses and histamine mediated pruritus.

Adult Dosage of Hydroxyzine for treating Sedation:

Oral: take orally between 50 to 100 milligrams.

IM: take hydroxyzine between 25 to 100 milligrams.

Oral: Administered as a sedative during anesthesia or in premedication.

IM: Used in pre and postpartum and in pre and postoperative additional therapy.

Adult Dosage of Hydroxyzine for Treating Nausea/Vomiting:

IM: Take hydroxyzine between 25 to 100 milligrams.

For alleviating nausea and vomiting excluding pregnancy linked nausea and vomiting.

Pediatric Dosage of Hydroxyzine for Treating Sedation:

Oral: Give 0.6 milligrams per kg

IM: Give 0.5 milligrams hydroxyzine per lb of body mass

Oral: Administered as a sedative during anesthesia or in premedication.

IM: for Pre- and postoperative additional therapy.

What are the Side Effects of Hydroxyzine?

Consult your physician as soon as possible if you observe any signs of allergy towards hydroxyzine like hives, breathing difficulties, swelling of tongue, lips, throat, and face.

In rare incidences will this medicine cause serious skin reactions? Stop using hydroxyzine immediately and contact your doctor immediately when you have abrupt skin rash or redness that scatters and causes yellow or white blistering, pustules or peeling.

Stop taking hydroxyzine immediately and contact your doctor when you have:

  • Rapid and throbbing heartbeats,
  • Convulsions,
  • Chest pain with headache,
  • Fainting, serious dizziness.
  • Confusion and drowsiness are the side effects of hydroxyzine are most common in adults.

General side effects of hydroxyzine include:

  • Rashes
  • Dry mouth
  • Drowsiness
  • Headache.

People between the age of 18 and 60 years who do not have other medical problems and are not using other medications are likely to have the following side effects of hydroxyzine:

  • Drowsiness that can damage your coordination and the ability to operate machinery or drive. Do not use alcohol.
  • Hydroxyzine can cause hallucinations, slight skin rash, headache and dry mouth. These side effects are slight and temporary.
  • This medicine can cause itching in some people.
  • Hydroxyzine can interact with other drugs such as meperidine, barburaturates, narcotics and other depressants.
  • Using this medicine as an antianxiety drug for more than 16 weeks has not been proved in clinical studies.
  • Hydroxyzine is unsuitable for patients in early pregnancy or those with stretched QT interval.
  • It is not established whether elderly patients are more responsive to the effects of this medicine. For safety measures, use lower doses on initiation.
