This hormone also contributes to the growth of new muscles and maintenance of the existing muscle-mass in a male body. It is a very powerful hormone. It is a dominant sex hormone in males, however it is also present in women.

Push-ups are a form of resistance exercises. Resistance exercises are known to increase testosterone in human body. The testosterone levels naturally keep changing throughout the day. This process continues throughout life. However, after the age of 30, testosterone levels naturally start to decrease. Push-ups can cause a natural increase in your testosterone levels. However, they do not prompt or stimulate the testosterone production better than some other exercises which target the lower body.

Hence, if doing push-ups, it is advisable to do as many sets as possible, as this may cause a considerable increase in testosterone levels.

Some Basic Testosterone Facts

Testosterone is produced by both, men and women. It is produced significantly in larger quantities in males. In men, the testosterone is produced in the testes, whereas in women, it is produced in the ovaries and the adrenal gland. Adrenal glands are located on the top of the kidneys. The testosterone is attached to proteins. Very small quantity of testosterone is present in the bloodstream by itself. This amount that is present in the blood is used for tests and researches when blood is drawn for tests etc. Men and women both experience an increase and decrease in their testosterone levels throughout the day and throughout their lifetime. In both the sexes, testosterone is found to be present in abundance in the mornings, whereas it is considerably lesser in the evenings.

Testosterone levels also fluctuate with age. In men, testosterone is seen to be at peak level when they are about the age of 18-19 years. in women however, they are present at the peak in their 20s. As the age advances, the testosterone keeps declining.

In both men and women, testosterone levels may get low due to some reasons. If found in low levels, signs and symptoms like loss of sex drive, muscle mass loss, osteoporosis etc. are seen in men. Whereas, in women, there could be a loss of sex drive and fatigue due to low testosterone.

Low testosterone causes certain effects on our body. These effects cannot be completely cured with the help of resistance exercises like push-ups. However, this type of exercises can certainly help to increase the levels of testosterone in the body considerably. Also, other exercises like heavy weight-lifting, high intensity-interval training and other fast-pace exercises are seen to increase testosterone levels naturally and considerably. Different types of exercises done and the number of repetitions or sets done can affect how much testosterone will be released in the body. The higher repetition sets provided better increases in testosterone levels in the body.

While doing exercise, if the ones that involve large muscles are included, it gives better results in increasing the testosterone levels. Also, for getting a substantial increase in the testosterone levels, total body exercises will have to be included, which involve more of the large muscles.

Testosterone is an important hormone in the male reproductive system. It is responsible for development of male sexual characteristics. It is also responsible for building up of muscle mass and maintenance of the same. Any deficiency in testosterone levels can cause symptoms like loss of sexual interest, weakness, under-development of male sexual characteristics (if the testosterone deficiency happens during childhood or puberty), a general sense of being unwell, and some serious conditions like osteoporosis and infertility in adulthood. Push-ups cannot cure the effects of testosterone; however, if done regularly, they can boost-up the levels of testosterone in the blood.
