Can a STD Go Away On It’s Own?

The answer to this question is no. It can never go away on it’s own. One has to take proper treatment for remission of the disease and considering that it might go away on it’s own is a myth. Do not neglect such issues as in long run you are the one who is going to suffer the consequences. STD needs proper treatment and follows up, then only it goes off completely else it will not. Use of improper medications and supplements may even worsen the disease. That is why proper treatment should be initiated as early as possible. But, how to decide which medication should be given?

So the answer is proper investigations which include culture, microscopy and clinical examinations should be done so as to find out the causative organism. So once a person is done with all his investigations the next step includes proper medication. So for every sexually transmitted disease there is a specific medication.

Medications

Here is the list of the organisms and the disease they cause and the drug of choice for that particular disease.

Chlamydial infection caused by chlamydia trachomatis. This is the most common cause of sexually transmitted disease. The drug of choice is tetracycline/doxycycline. Erythromycin is the drug of choice in pregnancy.

Herpes Simplex Virus causes herpes and among them herpes labialis is of most common type. The drug of choice is acyclovir.

Donovanosis – It is caused by calymmatobacterium granulomatis. Red velvet lesions appear on genital area. The drug of choice is azithromycin. Alternatives are doxycycline and chloramphenicol.

Chancroid which is caused by H. ducreyi which is responsible for multiple painful ulcers associated with lymphadenopathy. The drug of choice is azithromycin. Ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin, erythromycin are alternatives.

Syphilis – It is caused by Treponema pallidum. It is responsible for the single painless lesion in genital area. The drug of choice is benzathine penicillin. In patient allergic to penicillin tetracycline or doxycycline should be used.

Gonococcal infection – It is caused by Neisseria gonorrhea. Acute urethritis associated with purulent discharge is the chief complain of the patient. The drug of choice is ceftriaxone. If patient is allergic to penicillin, quinolones are used.

Pediculosis- This is another sexually transmitted disease which spreads through another route other than sexual route. Sharing towels and moist clothes with other person can lead to transmission of the disease. The drug of choice for pediculosis is permethrin 5%. The alternative is gamma benzene hexachloride which should be applied topically. Along with this, proper hygiene must be maintained.

Scabies- It is another disease which can be transmitted through non-sexual routes which include skin to skin contact, sharing of towels and clothes. The drug of choice is permethrin which should be applied on whole body sparing the face. It should be kept for at least 12 hours. Regular changing of beddings is recommended to the one having the disease. And along with the person family members should be even treated.

Trichomonas Vaginalis is a problem which is responsible for another sexually transmitted disease. The characteristics feature is the presence of greenish frothy discharge which helps in differentiating from other infections. The drug of choice is metronidazole which should be taken along with antacid.

Bacterial Vaginosis – It is transmitted through the sexual route.

Sexually Transmitted Disease and Adolescence

The sexually transmitted diseases are most often encountered in adolescents. Due to peer pressure, the adolescent usually gets involved in such things. HBV infections were common, but due to development of its vaccination many children are protected against the disease.

What Do We Understand By This?

One should always remember that once a person is infected with a sexually transmitted disease, it is really difficult to get rid of it without treatment. And remember get yourself treated as early as possible as there are high chances of infertility if sexually transmitted diseases are not treated in initial stages. So, be aware about the disease you are suffering from. Negligence is the biggest disease one could have. As soon as you get an ulcer on your genitals, get yourself checked. It may be a sexually transmitted disease.
