Prevention Of Multiple Sclerosis

MS or multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disorder characterized by progressive damage of the nerve fibers of the brain and spinal cord. It leads to disruption of myelin sheath around the nerves that act as a covering against shock and injuries. Its causes are exactly not known, but autoimmunity can be its cause. It affects women more than men in their middle age (15-60 years). Its symptoms include numbness, tingling, weakness, paralysis, pregnancy problems and many more. There is no cure for this disease. Its symptoms go in the remission period and return back when this period is over. There is no prevention of this disease.

Prevention Of Multiple Sclerosis

MS or multiple sclerosis is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by the affections of the central nervous system. It is marked by demyelination of the nerve tissues. Myelin sheath is the covering of the nerve tissues that protects the nerves from damage and shock. In this condition, the immune system of the body considers healthy nerve tissues as foreign intruders and destroys them. It involves the brain, spinal cord and other nerve fibers of the body. This results in improper or faulty flow of impulses or signals from the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body. This causes problems related to vision, hearing, body balance, muscle control, and other normal functions. The course of the disease varies in different persons.

There is no prevention for multiple sclerosis or its flare-ups. There is lots of research studies are being done to find out the prevention of this disease. It is found that genetic variations have no impact on the appearance of the disease. Environmental factors are supposed to cause their flare-ups. Epstein-Barr virus infection, cigarette smoking, and vitamin D deficiency are linked with multiple sclerosis.

The flareups and disease progression of multiple sclerosis can be prevented by cessation of cigarette smoking and vitamin D supplementation. Recent studies suggest that Vitamin D is an important factor that can prevent MS and can also slow down the progress of the disease. Regular exercises with proper rest and management of stress can prevent the flareups of the disease.

Multiple Sclerosis Causes

There is no definite cause for multiple sclerosis. Autoimmunity is considered the cause of the disease. The exact cause of the disease is not discovered yet. Some theories state that vitamin D deficiency can cause this disease. Viral infections such as Epstein Barr infection can trigger this disease. Too much consumption of salt is also linked with this disease. But there is no proof of such theories. This disease is not contagious and will not spread from one person to another.

Multiple Sclerosis Symptoms

Multiple sclerosis has an unpredictable course and different severity of symptoms. It can be mild or severe. Its severity of symptoms may vary from person to person. In some people, the disease progress very slowly. In some people, its progress is too rapid. In its mild form, it does not cause disabilities. However, in the course of time, its symptoms become worse. Its early symptoms include double vision or vision loss. The other symptoms of MS are-

  • Visual Changes– when the optic nerve is involved in MS, it causes visual impairments like double vision, loss of vision, etc.
  • Numbness– there is a sensation of numbness or weakness or tingling or burning in the affected area. This may interrupt the normal functions of the affected part.
  • Vertigo– a sense of spinning is felt while walking.
  • Postural Imbalances– due to improper nerve supply, the coordination of arms and legs is disturbed, that results in problems related walking, posture and balance.
  • Muscle Spasm– it causes a contraction in muscles in the affected person

Conclusion

Multiple sclerosis is a condition marked by demyelination of the nerve fibers of the brain and spinal cord. This disease cannot be cured and its symptoms disappear only during the remission period and return back. It cannot be prevented. Some scientific studies suggest that vitamin D supplementation may help in the prevention of the disease.
