How Long Will It Take To Recover From Nephrotic Syndrome & How Long Do The Symptoms Last?

Nephrotic syndrome is a chronic kidney disease characterized by the release of excess protein in the urine. It is caused due to damage in the kidney. The causes of kidney damage can be diseases like focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, membranous nephropathy, renal vein thrombosis, diabetes, lupus, HIV infection, and others. It can affect any person of any age. It affects men more than women. Its symptoms include swelling in the lower extremities, face and hands, weight gain, tiredness, loss of appetite and many more. It is often curable. The best way to cure nephrotic syndrome is to treat its causes.

How Long Will It Take To Recover From Nephrotic Syndrome?

Nephrotic syndrome is a chronic kidney disease marked by the accumulation of water and leakage of protein through kidneys. It may take a few months to a few years to recover completely. In a few cases, it ends within a year. In some cases, it may take more than five years. Certain patients usually adults may require lifetime treatment. It depends on the treatment of underlying disease and patients’ response to the medicines.

The nephrotic disease is a chronic disease that may require a long time to be cured completely. It goes on its own if an underlying disease is treated successfully. It also depends on the response of the body towards the prescribed medicines. Its time taken to recover is often unpredictable. It may take a few months to a few years. Many patients get rid of this syndrome in a period of one year. In some cases, it may take five or more years to recover. In a few cases, adults may require permanent treatment. (3) Some patients may develop kidney disease for the long term that needs frequent dialysis and kidney transplantation for permanent relief.(1)

How Long Do The Symptoms Last?

Nephrotic syndrome is represented by symptoms such as swelling in the face, eyes, lower extremities, and abdomen. The patient with this condition may have rashes or sores in the skin, with loss of appetite and unintentional weight gain. The urine also becomes foamy. In some cases, seizures may also occur.(1) Its symptoms improve and disappear eventually when the underlying disease is treated. Its symptoms usually end in a few weeks or longer.(4) In certain cases, symptoms do not improve even with the treatment.(2)

Nephrotic syndrome is a kidney condition characterized by leakage of protein through the kidney. It causes a reduction in blood protein, increases in blood cholesterol, increases in triglycerides and blood clotting. It affects males more than women. Its incidence is also common in the children of age 2- 6 years.(1) The children who have nephrotic syndrome as congenital disease need kidney transplantation.(2)

Nephrotic syndrome is not a disease but it is usually caused by other diseases. It is caused by damage in the glomeruli. Glomeruli is the part of the kidney that filters waste products from the blood. It is designed in such a way that it does not filter macroparticles from the blood. When glomeruli are damaged, protein leaks from the blood into the urine. Albumin is the main protein that helps in the removal of extra fluid from the body. When albumin is excreted through urine, then swelling develops in the lower extremities and face.(2)

The conditions that cause nephrotic syndrome are focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (a genetic defect), membranous nephropathy, minimal change disease, and renal vein thrombosis. These diseases are diseases of the kidneys. They are the primary causes of nephrotic disease. Other diseases that affect the entire body can cause this syndrome. They are secondary causes of this condition. These diseases involve diabetes, lupus, and amyloidosis.(2) Infections like strep throat, hepatitis, and HIV infection can trigger the nephrotic syndrome.(1) In certain cases, certain medicines that involve antibiotics and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may trigger this condition.
