Vomiting Without Associated Symptoms in Children

Vomiting in children is a common complaint but can become serious at times. While most of the times, vomiting is accompanied with other complaints, sometimes, vomiting may also occur without any other associated symptoms. It is important to look for what causes vomiting but no other associated symptoms in children.

It is difficult to identify the root cause of vomiting when there are no other symptoms. Viral infections are a common cause of vomiting in children, while sometimes deep coughing or many other factors can also trigger the episodes of vomiting without symptoms in children.

What Can Cause Vomiting Without Associated Symptoms in Children?

Cyclic Vomiting Cycle: This is one such medical condition that can cause vomiting with no other associated symptoms in children. This condition can cause several episodes of vomiting which may last for several hours in a day or for several days. During the episodes of vomiting, children may become lethargic, unwilling to talk, may refuse to eat or they may also become extremely thirsty and may drool.

The factors that trigger episodes of cyclic vomiting cycle in children include motion sickness, overeating, food allergy and hot weather. Stress and excitement can also trigger the episodes vomiting in children but no other symptoms. Stomach pain and nausea too can trigger vomiting but no other symptoms in children.

Cyclic vomiting cycle may begin with prodromal stage of nausea and lethargy, followed by vomiting but no other symptoms in children. This may be followed by a phase during which the vomiting stops and children begin to feel energetic again. Appetite also slowly restores and the child may begin to feel well.

Some of the other causes of vomiting in children with no other associated symptoms include:

  • Bacterial Infection – Bacterial infections cause stomach upset and often result in vomiting in children.
  • Acid Reflux Disease in Children – Many children suffer from reflux disease, which is also a common cause of vomiting but no other associated symptoms like fever in children.
  • Food Poisoning – Contaminated food can disturb the digestive system and can cause vomiting with no other symptoms in children.
  • Hot Weather – Children get overheated during extreme summers or after playing in the sun, which can cause vomiting with no other accompanying symptoms.
  • Coughing and Crying – Excessive coughing or crying can cause increased stress and vomiting in children.
  • Menstrual Periods in Adolescent Girls – Teenage girls can experience vomiting due to hormonal changes and menstrual periods. It is a one of the common causes of vomiting not accompanied with other symptoms in adolescent girls.
  • Overeating During Bedtime – Overeating at dinner, late dinner, heavy meals and similar factors too can cause only vomiting with no other associated symptoms in children.
  • Sinusitis and Influenza – Allergic cold, sinusitis, influenza and cough can sometimes cause vomiting in children.
  • Motion Sickness – Motion sickness often causes over stimulation and may trigger vomiting without any other symptoms in children.
  • Too much of stress and excitement often causes vomiting but no other symptoms in children.

Treatment for Vomiting Without Associated Symptoms in Children

Since the major cause of vomiting but no other symptoms in children is cyclic vomiting cycle, a proper history and clinical examination is done. Physicians also identify the condition by reviewing the vomiting episodes and its severity. Some investigations may be ordered to rule out other conditions.

Treatment for vomiting which is not accompanied with any other symptoms in children includes medications to control nausea and vomiting and reduce the frequency of vomiting episodes. Sedatives may also be prescribed to some children with vomiting without any symptoms. Some of the other treatment options to stop vomiting in children include bed rest in the darkened rooms during the vomiting episodes. Sipping on cool water or sucking ice may help some children.

Treating the cause of vomiting without associated symptoms in children is equally important. For e.g. treating cold, cough or influenza with cold and cough medications, treating infections with antibiotics and treating reflux disease with rest, appropriate diet and medicines.

Warning Signs of Vomiting in Children

Usually, the episodes of vomiting without associated symptoms in children are not serious in early stages. But, it can be serious in some cases which can indicate for some severe health complications. There are some warning signs to look out for when medical attention may be needed. These include

  • When the vomiting in children last for more than 24 hours
  • Due to vomiting, if children become dehydrated with decreased urination, dry mouth and lips or if there is crying without tears and dark yellow urine
  • Vomit contains blood
  • If children show signs of lethargy, jaundice and excessive fatigue.
