Nausea is often considered in a bad light, but it has a brighter side as well. Nausea helps in the elimination of toxins from the body, availability of pregnancy hormones in the body which is an indication of fetal development and reduces the risk of miscarriage.

Pregnancy is the beautiful phase of a woman’s life. The whole family will be excited to welcome the newborn and tend to care for her needs. During this phase, it is common to experience morning sickness which is nothing but nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.

There are many reasons for morning sickness such as the body has increased level of estrogen, progesterone and human chorionic gonadotropin which can produce an unpleasant feeling of nausea and vomiting. The elevated hormones levels in the blood are an indication of the development of the fetal placenta, which plays a key role in the supply of nutrients to the fetus. The larger placenta produces more hormones and more morning sickness. A pregnant woman is highly sensitive to smell and some drugs can also be responsible for the feeling of nausea and vomiting. Pregnant ladies often experience cravings which are indications of the body requirements and should never be ignored and be compensated. For example, if your body is craving for milk and related products it means your body needs calcium if a body is craving for peanut butter then it means your body needs more protein to make calories.

Take proper and balanced nutrition and consult your gynecologist for any doubts and apprehensions. It is important to stay hydrated all the time especially when the woman who has got morning sickness. There will be loss of water and body fluids, which needs to be compensated as early as possible. Check your body for the signs of dehydration, a dehydrated body will have a dry mouth and skin, headaches and muscle cramps.

According to a study published in JAMA Internal Medicine, the occurrence of morning sickness increases the chances of fetus retention and decreased risk of pregnancy loss. The study indicates morning sickness as a symptom of a healthy pregnancy. The study results are based on 800 pregnant women, whose pregnancy was confirmed through urine tests. The study participants were requested to track their nausea and vomiting symptoms in the questionnaires. Unfortunately, 188 out of 800 pregnancies ended in miscarriage. Among the participant, 18% of women experienced nausea without vomiting and 3% with both nausea and vomiting. The intensity of morning sickness was increased by the 8th week in both the groups. It was to 57% in nausea group and 27% in nausea with vomiting group. The study concluded that there was a 50-75% reduction in the loss of pregnancy in women who had morning sickness.

There can be a number of factors which triggers morning sickness. It is a common sight that pregnant women feel hungry even after eating food, as babies developing inside need energy for growth and development. There will be increased appetite so make sure that you have some snacks by your side whenever you feel hungry.

Women often feel nauseated when the stomach is empty and feel rejuvenated when they have some healthy snacks and food, especially during night time keeps some snacks by your side to avoid any hunger and laziness to go and collect the food. Make sure what all the snacks you are consuming are healthy and nutritious. BRAT or BRATTY diet is a simple diet which is composed of banana, rice, applesauce and toast or banana, rice, applesauce, toast, tea, and yogurt. It is a nutritious diet and less in fiber and is gentle on the stomach. If you feel nauseous at the smell of cooking, then avoid cooking to stay calm and hydrated, as nausea will make you quite uncomfortable resulting in vomiting and dehydration. When cooking use an exhaust fan or open window, which gives a fresh breath of air and removes the smell from the interiors.
