“Comedo” means “Pimple”. And this is the least severe form of any acne that is caused due to skin pores that have being clogged with debris and sebum. Now, comedogenic products are those products that contain ingredients that are likely to boost clogging of the pores. Unlike comedogenic products, non-comedogenic products are those that contain ingredients that do not promote clogging of pores.

So, when a skin care product holds a label as, “Non-comedogenic”, it means that it won’t clog pores. However, there is no standard in place for such a term anywhere in real. Labeling a product as Non-comedogenic does not mean that it will not clog the pores. It just means that the formula is lighter. But, such products may less likely cause acne or worsen the breakout.

Pros And Cons Of Non Comedogenic Product:

There are some non comedogenic skin products, such as the cleanser and they have their own pros as well as cons.

Benzoyl peroxide, that is the most common ingredient in such non comedogenic cleanser are great for treating mild cases of acne if used appropriately. It can be really effective as a bacteria-destroyer. However, you need to use it for a few weeks to see your desired results and acne will come back once you stop using it.

One of the cons of non comedogenic cleanser is that it gets your skin dry soon and so, you will require a moisturizer along with the cleanser. There may also be some other side effects such as itching, burning, skin rash and swelling of the skin. Moreover, some users can also develop blisters on their skin. Similarly, salicylic acid, another ingredient in non comedogenic cleansers can also cause side effects like skin irritation and minor stinging.

However, we must mention that each one of us has different skin types and they react to cleansers or any other skin products in different ways. So, you must always see your dermatologist if you experience any kind of severe side effects because of any skin products, may it be a non comedogenic product or a comedogenic one.

We are aware that a product when labeled as ‘Non-comedogenic” does not really guarantee that it does not clog your skin pores. However, if you want to know about the ingredients that you need to look for to free yourself from acne then look for products that are fragrance-free and those that contain ingredients like retinol, glycolic acid, hyaluronic acid, clay, benzol peroxide, sulfur, and witch hazel. These ingredients are great for acne-prone and also oily skin.
