Due to exposure to air, the throat tends to become dry when one snores or sleeps with their mouth open. This results in the person having a sore throat on waking up. Usually, one tends to sleep with their mouth open when their nose is obstructed or blocked with congestion, etc.

Acid Reflux

Acid reflux occurs when the stomach acid rises up partially into the esophagus and causes sensations like heartburn and sore throat. Although acid reflux is mostly experienced after eating a meal, it can also happen when one sleeps. So, if the morning dry sore throat is accompanied by a bad taste in the mouth, it may be a result of acid reflux.


Even going to bed without having adequate amount of fluid can cause sore throat in the morning. Also, sleeping in a dry room or with an active dehumidifier can have a similar effect of waking up with a dry and scratchy throat.

Soothing Drinks to Soothe the Sore Throat

The pain caused by a morning sore throat can be relieved by drinking warm soups and broths, tea with some honey. Cold drinks should be avoided as cold temperatures can cause the tissues in the throat to contract and thus increase pain and sore throat felt after waking up in the morning.

Avoiding Large Meals

To prevent morning sore throat caused by acid reflux, one should not eat at all or at least avoid eating large meals within a few hours of bedtime.

Proper Hydration

By keeping the body adequately hydrated, one can get rid of morning throat soreness and dryness. One should drink optimal amount of water throughout the day, or at least have a glass or two before bed time to prevent dry sore throat after waking up. They should also consider using a humidifier when sleeping in a room with dry air.

Gargling for Relieving Dry Sore Throat

Gargling with saline water proves very effective when treating sore throat caused by bacterial infection. One can gargle as many times as they want throughout the day. As one gargles, the salt in the water pulls out moisture from the throat making it a less suitable environment for bacteria to thrive in.

Using Decongestants

In case the morning sore throat is caused due to nasal congestion at night, one should try to clear the nasal passages before going to bed. Nasal blockage can be cleared simply by rubbing some VapoRub on the chest, using a nasal spray, taking a decongestant or inhaling some steam. With this remedy, you will not wake up with a sore throat every morning.


Sucking on a lozenge or dissolving one in tea can help provide relief from dry sore throat in the morning to a large extent. One can simply suck a lozenge or drink a cup of hot tea with a lozenge dissolved in it. To avoid any choking hazard, the dissolving method is better when treating children with a sore throat.

When Should One See a Doctor for a Dry Sore Throat?

A visit to the doctor is required in case the throat dryness and soreness persists for more than a week without any improvement and when it is believed to be caused by conditions more serious than a cold or dehydration. One should seek immediate medical attention if throat soreness and dryness is accompanied by symptoms like high fever, swelling in the tonsil, pus and pain in the ear, bad breath, throat pain, breathing problems and difficulty in swallowing, talking or opening mouth.
