Do Staph Infection Go Away On Its Own & How Long Does It Take To Recover From It?

Staph, also known as Staphylococcus is a type of bacteria. These bacteria can harmlessly live on our skin surfaces, especially around the mouth, nose, and private parts. However, when the skin is punctured or if it is broken, staph bacteria can enter the wound and result in a staph infection.

Let us read the following sections and know if staph infections go away on its own, and also about how long does it take to recover from a staph infection.

Do Staph Infection Go Away On Its Own?

Staph bacteria are seen on the skin and they mostly affect the skin resulting in several types of skin infections, such as boils, skin abscess, and impetigo. Food poisoning is also caused due to the invasive staph infection and at times, it may go away on its own. Though most severe cases of staph infections including the staph skin infection as well as the invasive staph infections (such as pneumonia, toxic shock syndrome) require to be treated with antibiotics, there are some infections that can go away on their own. With effective treatments staph infections go away quickly.

How Long Does It Take To Recover From A Staph Infection?

The duration that it takes to recover from a staph infection primarily depends on the type of infection and whether the affected person gets appropriate treatment for it or not. Staph skin infections have similar duration, while invasive staph infections have varying duration.

Staph skin infections such as, boil, impetigo, and skin abscess usually take around 10 days to recover once treatment begins on an immediate basis. The rashes and blisters caused due to staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome may go away after 5-7 days if treatment is administered immediately.

Apart from this, if boils opens and drains then the healing period may be shorter. Similarly if skin abscess has grown fully then it takes around 1-3 weeks before it disappears on its own.

Invasive staph infections take varying durations to recover. Food poisoning may take about 3-4 days to recover. But pneumonia may take enough time to heal. It is estimated that healthy individuals who develop pneumonia may have it for 2-3 weeks, while older adults may take about 6-8 weeks, or even longer to recover. Endocarditis is a condition caused due to invasive staph infection and the treatment usually lasts for 2 weeks, after which the condition heals gradually.

Conclusion:

It is quite difficult to tell the exact time that the staph infection takes to recover, as it greatly depends on several factors, including the patient’s age, the body’s ability to fight of the infection, the medical treatment taken and so on. However, if by any chance you experience any of the symptoms of staph infection, it is always advisable for you to see your doctor and take the best possible treatment so as to keep away from any further complications.
