It is advisable not to use estradiol if you have are suffering from blood clot in your lungs or your lower body. Those who are allergic from food dyes or any medicines should not use estradiol. Taking these hormones the risk of stroke, heart attack or stroke is very high. This is most likely to those people with high blood pressure, smokers, overweight, high cholesterol, triglycerides and those who are suffering from diabetes.

Estradiol is effectively used to treat symptoms that are caused by menopause which include: burning, irritation and hot flashes and vagina dryness.

Estradiol also effectively prevents a condition faced by postmenopausal women. Estradiol is used by women who suffer from ovarian failure and other condition that occur due to lack of estrogen which is naturally produced by the body. Estradiol effectively replaces estrogen in women with ovarian failure. In some cases estradiol is used partially in cancer treatment in both men and women.

People with certain condition are advised not use estradiol. Those conditions include: unusual bleeding from the vagina, liver disease, any history of hormone of dependent cancer (breast cancer, uterine ovarian and thyroid) or heart attack.

I am Pregnant, Can I Use Estradiol?

It is not advised to use estradiol when a woman is pregnant. Estradiol increases the risk of developing a certain condition that leads to uterine cancer. If you experience unusual bleeding from the vagina it is important to consult your doctor about the situation.

Estradiol should not be used in prevention of conditions like: heart attack, stroke or dementia disease. Using estradiol for a longtime can increase the risk of breast cancer or blood clotting. For the expectant women, estradiol is likely to harm the unborn baby or even cause complication during delivery.

If suffering from abnormalities such as liver disease, vaginal bleeding, uterine or breast cancer, any history of heart attack or stroke or hormones dependent cancer. It is necessary to take regular mammograms and physical exams. Every month one should take self- examination of your breast to check for any lumps.

What is the Recommended Dosage of Estradiol?

Estradiol dosage information dosage varies for different condition.

General Dose of Estradiol for Adults with Postmenopausal Symptoms:

Orally: 0.45 milligrams to 2 milligrams once in a day.

Parenteral: 1 milligram to 5milligrams of estradiol cypionate IM in each 3 to 4 weeks or 10 milligrams to 20 milligrams of estradiol IM for every four weeks.

Vaginal ring: 0.05 milligrams per day or 0.1 milligrams per day vaginal ring. It is good to retain the ring for three months and later replace with a new ring if only therapy is continued.

General Adult Dose of Estradiol for Atrophic Urethritis:

Oral: 1 milligram to 2 milligrams once per day.

Parenteral: 10 milligrams to 20 milligrams of estradiol valerate IM after every four weeks.

Vaginal ring: 0.05 milligrams per day or 0.1 milligrams per day vaginal ring. The ring is supposed to remain for three months in place and it should be replaced with a new one if therapy continues.

General Adult Dose of Estradiol for Atrophic Vaginitis:

Oral: 1 milligrams to 2 milligrams should be taken orally once in a day.

Parenteral: 10 milligrams to 20 milligrams of estradiol valerate IM to be taken in every four weeks

Vaginal ring: 0.05 milligrams in a day or 0.1 milligrams per day ring vaginal ring. You are supposed to remain with ring in place for three months if therapy continues and after that replace the ring with a new one.

General Adult Dosage of Estradiol for Hypo-estrogenism:

Oral: 1 milligram to 2 milligrams to be taken orally one time in a day

Parenteral: 1.5 milligrams to 2 milligrams of estradiol cypionate IM to be taken only once in a month or 10milligrams to 20milligrams estradiol valerate IM after each 4 weeks.

General Adult Dosage of Estradiol for Oophorectomy:

Oral: 1milligrams to 2milligrams to be taken orally only one time a day.

Parenteral: 10milligrams to 20milligrams of estradiol valerate to be taken in every four weeks.

General Adult Dosage of Estradiol for Primary Ovarian Failure:

Oral: 1 milligrams to 2 milligrams to be taken orally only once in a day.

Parenteral: 10 milligrams to 20 milligrams of estradiol valerate IM for every four weeks.

General Adult Dosage of Estradiol for Breast Cancer- Palliative:

10 milligrams orally: to be taken at least 3 times in a day for duration of three months.

NOTE: you should only consider estrogen therapy which is done due to breast cancer should only be considered for palliation in treating metastatic disease in specific patients.

General Adult Dosage of Estradiol for Osteoporosis:

Orally: 0.5 milligrams to be taken one time in a day.

Topical: 0.0025 milligrams to 0.1 milligrams in a day (transdermal film). Estradiol should be applied topically one or two times in a week on the breasts. 14mcg per day/ week (transdermal film) should be applied topically only once in a week.

Common application site include: upper arm or thigh, buttocks, or lower abdomen. The application of these areas is determined by manufacturer formulation.

General Adult Dosage of Estradiol for Prostate Cancer:

Orally: 1milligrams to 2milligrams at least 3 times in a day.

Parental: estradiol valerate 30milligrams IM for 1 to 2 weeks.

Response should be seen after three months after starting of the therapy.

What are the Side Effects of Estradiol?

The following are the most common side effects which are caused by the use estradiol:

  • Headache and breast pain;
  • Vaginal discharge or discharge and changes of menstrual periods is a side effect of estradiol;
  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Thinning scalp hair
  • Vomiting, bloating, stomach cramps and vomiting are also side effects.
  • If any sign of allergic reaction is noticed due to the use of estradiol, seek medical attention immediately. The signs include; Difficulty in breathing, hives, swollen face, tongue, throat or lips. Call a doctor if you start to experience the following:
  • Heart attack symptoms (pain spreading to the shoulder or jaw, pressure or chest pain, sweating nausea etc…
  • Signs and symptoms of stroke which include: sudden weakness or numbness especially on part of your body, vision problems balance and slurry speech is a severe side effect of estradiol.
  • Signs of blood clotting in your lungs which are shown by sudden cough, chest pains, coughing up blood and rapid breathing.
  • Signs of blood clot in the leg which include: pain, increased warmth, pain, swelling or redness in one or both legs
  • Tender or swollen stomach
  • Unusual bleeding from the vaginal
  • Lump in the breast
  • Yellowing of your skin and eyes
  • Fluid retention which is shown by rapid weight and weight gain is also a severe side effect of estradiol.
  • High level of calcium in the blood that causes nausea, loss of appetite, constipation, increased urination or thirst, weakness, confusion, stomach pain, joint pain, muscle pain and feeling restless and tired.
