How Effective is Juxtapid, Know its Dosage, Side Effects

There are medicines that can interact with juxtapid or lomitapide and should not be taken at similar times. Therefore, it is important to tell your doctor about all the medicines you are taking and all your other diseases and medications.

If you have any allergic reactions to juxtapid or lomitapide stop taking it any further and call your doctor for immediate help. In most cases the reactions are itching, jaundice, upper stomach pain, clay-colored stools, nausea, dark urine, loss of appetite.

Juxtapid also known as lomitapide is a medication to effectively lower cholesterol levels. This is responsible in lowering bad cholesterol in the body like the non-high-density liproprotein or low-density lipoprotein. Juxtapid or lomitapide also reduces other proteins that carry bad cholesterol.

Juxtapid or lomitapide is taken along with a low-fat diet and other treatment methods to effectively decrease the total cholesterol mainly in people suffering from homozygous also known as hypercholesterolemia which is an inherited kind of cholesterol.

It is not sure if juxtapid or lomitapide can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Do not have juxtapid or lomitapide if you are pregnant.

Points to Know Before Taking Juxtapid or Lomitapide

Juxtapid or lomitapide is only available under the special program Juxtapidres REMS program. Only if you are registered in the program and know the risk of taking these medications, you will be able to get the medicine.

If you have any allergic reactions to lomitapide, do not take juxtapid or lomitapide. Similarly, this medicine should be avoided if you are pregnant or have a severe liver.

There are few medicines that can interact with this medicine and should not be taken at the same time. If you are taking any other medicines that can interact with juxtapid or lomitapide, tell your doctor to change treatment plan. Here are few medicines that can interact with Juxtapid

  • Nefazodone
  • Aprepitant
  • Blood pressure or heart tablets – cerapamil, diltiazem
  • Imatinib, crizotinib
  • Medications for Hepatitis C – Telaprevir, boceprevir
  • Antibiotic medicines – telithromycin, ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, clarithromycin
  • AIDS or HIV medicine – indinavir, atazanavir, tipranavir, delavirdine, cobicistat (Prexcobix, Evotaz, Tybost, Stribid), ritonavir, darunavir and is taken along with ritonavir, nelfinavir, fosamprenavir, delavirdine, saquinavir
  • Antifungal medication – voriconazole, itraconazole, fluconazole, posaconazole, ketoconazole.

It is important to tell your doctor if you have any of these medical conditions, to make juxtapid or lomitapide safe for you

  • AIDS or HIV
  • Hepatitis C, liver disease, abnormal liver functions
  • Large consumption of alcohol
  • Intestinal disorder or bowel problems
  • Kidney disease or on dialysis
  • Severe lactase deficiency, herfitary galactose intolerance, glucose galactose malabsorption.

Juxtapid or lomitapide should not be taken if you are pregnant as it can cause birth defects and harm unborn baby. It is important to get a negative pregnancy test prior to starting juxtapid or lomitapide. While on juxtapid or lomitapide you must take effective birth controls to prevent pregnancy. In case you become pregnant during this course of medications, inform your doctor at the earliest.

Your name will be listed in pregnancy registry if you are pregnant. This will be done to track the outcome of pregnancy and to learn what effects the medicine has on the unborn child.

Juxtapid or lomitapide is very effective that it could even make strong birth control pills ineffective. It is important to talk to your doctor about it and ask for non hormonal birth control methods like spermicide, diaphragm and condom to prevent pregnancy during this treatment.

However, it is not known if juxtapid or lomitapide can pass through breast milk to the feeding baby therefore do not breast feed your child when you are on juxtapid or lomitapide.

What is the Suggested Dosage of Juxtapid?

Treatment for Huperlipidemia – Regular Adult dosage

Start dosage: One time a day orally 5 milligrams

Maintenance dose: one time a day orally 5 to 60 milligrams (this should be tracked and individualized to check the response of treatment and goal of therapy).

Maximum dosage: one time a day orally 60 milligrams.

The dosage given to the patient can be gradually increased depending on the tolerability, safety and response to the treatment. Dosage can be gradually increase by this order, for a period of minimum 2 weeks, 5 milligrams daily orally and then it can be increased by 10 milligrams, to 20 milligrams, 40 milligrams, 60 milligrams. These can be increased with a minimum interval of 4 weeks between each dosage increase

Juxtapid or lomitapide has to be taken on empty stomach with at least 2 hours after evening meal with full glass water.

Treatment for Homozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia – Regular Adult Dosage

Starting juxtapid or lomitapide dosage: One time a day orally 5 milligrams.

Juxtapid or lomitapide maintenance dosage: one time a day orally 5 to 60 milligrams (this should be tracked and individualized to check the response of treatment and goal of therapy).

Maximum juxtapid or lomitapide dosage: One time a day orally 60 milligrams.

What are the Side Effects of Juxtapid?

If you have any allergic reactions to juxtapid or lomitapide, get immediate medical assistance. In most cases allergic reactions are swelling of lips, throat, face, tongue, difficulty in breathing or hives

If you have any symptoms of liver problems such as the following mentioned, stop using juxtapid or lomitapide and get immediate medical help:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Upper stomach pain, nausea
  • Clay colored stools, dark urine
  • Tired feeling, itching
  • Jaundice (yellowing of eyes or skin).

Other common side effects of juxtapid or lomitapide are:

  • Constipation
  • Stomach pain, vomiting
  • Indigestion, gas are all side effects of juxtapid or lomitapide
  • Diarrhea.
