Ankle Joint Anatomy
- Ankle joint link the foot and lower leg.
- Ankle joint is an important joint to accomplish walking, jogging and change of position from sitting to standing.
- Upper body Weight is transmitted through ankle joint to arch of the foot.
- Weight is transfer from arch anteriorly to toes and sole, and posteriorly to heel.
- Ankle joint twist causes mild to severe injury depending on severity of twist and weight transmission through twisted ankle joint.

- Fracture of ankle bone
- Dislocation of ankle joint
- Tear of tendon
- Tear or sprain ligament
- Bleeding within joint
Bones Of Ankle Joint Are As Follows-
- Tibia
- Fibula
- Talus and
- Calcaneous
Ankle Joint Is Consist Of Three Joints-
- Tibio-talur joint: Links Tibia with Talus bone
- Tibia-Fibular Joint: Links lower end of tibia and fibula
- Subtalar joint or Talo-cacaneal joint: Links Talus bone with Calcaneal bone
Ligaments of Ankle Joint-
- Ligaments maintain link between the two adjacent bones forming joint.
- Ligaments are fastened and anchored to adjacent bones.
- Ligament prevents separation of the bone.
1. Medial (Inner) Ligament or Deltoid Ligament
It consists of 3 Ligaments as Follows:
- Posterior Tibio-Talar Ligament
- Tibio-Navicular Ligament
- Tibio-Calcaneal Ligament
2. Lateral (Outer) Ligament-
- Anterior Talo-Fibular Ligament
- Posterior Talo-fibular ligament
- Calcaneo-Fibular Ligament
3. Posterior Ankle Joint Ligament
- Posterior Talo-Calcaneal Ligament
