Mitral valve disease is a medical condition characterized by improper or non-functioning of the mitral valve. This affects the flow of blood between the left atrium and left ventricle. It is caused by either too loosening or tightening of the mitral valve. Its symptoms include fatigue throughout the day, heart murmur, shortness of breath, discomfort in the chest and many more. Mitral valve disease can be treated by surgery of the mitral valve with its repair or replacement. Its recovery depends on the type of surgery performed, age, diet, and physical activity of the patient.

Recovery Period For Mitral Valve Disease

The recovery period in mitral valve disease depends on the severity, type, and nature of the disease. It also depends on the type of treatment selected, type of surgery, and age of the patient. Normal recovery period from the surgery of heart is four to six weeks. This recovery time is necessary for the strengthening of the muscles and complete healing of the wound.

Minimal invasive surgery of mitral valve can take two to four weeks to heal completely and recover. Open heart surgery may take eight to ten weeks to recover. If a wire or special strips of tape are utilized in the surgery to support rib bones, then it may take six to twelve weeks to heal completely.

Other factors also play an important role in the recovery period of mitral valve disease. These factors are.

Diet Modification. There is a need to have modifications in the diet after the surgery or treatment of mitral valve disease for faster recovery. Introduction of fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low fat food are good for the health of the heart. They also help in faster recovery. Low fat diet includes lean meat, fish and low fat dairy products. It is equally important to avoid high saturated food, sugary items and food high in salt and sodium. One should avoid processed meat. It is recommended to stick to high fiber diet with low cholesterol and low fat. Calcium supplements should be avoided if you have undergone valve replacement.

Weight Control. Weight plays an important role in the health of the heart. People who have excess weight have a slow recovery of the mitral valve disease. Excess weight increases load on the heart, so excess weight should be controlled to gain god heart health.

Physical Activity. Exercises are important to recover completely after the mitral valve disease surgery. Exercises aid in the strengthening of the heart muscles and to regain proper functioning of the heart. It is advisable to start with light exercises that must be gradually progressed to strengthening exercises. You should perform these exercises under the supervision of your physical therapist and your physician. It helps in the improvement of the overall health of the heart with the introduction of regular moderate exercises for at least 150 minutes a week.

Lifestyle Modification. Smoking and alcohol consumption should be limited, it is better to stop them to enjoy the good health of the heart. One should change sleep patterns too which should be at least 6 hours sleep a day. Stress management is also very necessary for overall good cardiovascular health.

Mitral valve disease is a disorder of mitral valve of the heart that cannot function properly. In this disease, mitral valve cannot open properly for the flow of blood from left atrium to left ventricle. This condition is caused by either loosening of the mitral valve that results in backflow of blood from ventricle to atria (mitral valve regurgitation) or too tightening of the valve, that causes less blood flow from the atrium to the ventricle (mitral valve stenosis).

Conclusion

Mitral valve disease occurs when the functioning of the mitral valve is impaired. Normally, mitral valve disease requires four to six weeks to recover completely after treatment or surgery. It totally relies on the age and job of the patient, severity of the case, type of surgery and rehabilitation programs.
