How To Prevent Neuromas?

A neuroma is the condition of abnormal growth of nerve tissues and the patient experiences pain and tingling sensation. These are benign, but it affects the patient’s life.

How To Prevent Neuromas?

Prevention and treatment of neuroma depend upon the severity of the condition and the risk of a person for developing neuroma. Following are the ways of preventing neuroma.

Wear Proper Shoes. Shoes are the most important preventive measures when it comes to preventing Morton’s neuroma. The shoes should be such that it provides proper space for the toe to move.

Avoid Heel Shoes. Shoes with heel must be avoided by the patients who are at high risk of developing neuroma or who have a history of neuroma development. Even if high heel shoes are required, minimize the amount of time for wearing.

Customize Shoes. Customize your shoes as per the requirement of the foot as it will help feeling better. Further, custom orthotics also evenly distributes the pressure throughout the foot.

Minimize Scar Formation. Save formation should be minimized when any surgery involving peripheral nerves is to be done.

Appropriate Method For Nerve Cutting. Appropriate method of nerve cutting such as laser transection method should be used.

Nerve Grafting. Nerve grafting should be instantly done after there is an injury to the nerves.

Implantation Of Nerve. Nerve should be implanted into the muscles after removing the neuroma to prevent further damage.

Capping Of Nerve Stump. Another method to prevent recurrence of neuroma is to cap the nerve stump.

A neuroma is a condition characterized by the presence of abnormal nerve tissue growth. The growth is benign i.e. it does not have the potential to metastasize. However, it causes severe pain and affects the routine life. The pain, in this condition, is due to the thickening of nerve tissues. A neuroma can occur at any part of the body. The cause of neuroma is the development of lacerated nerve tissue. A neuroma is the condition caused when the nerve at a particular place is damaged due to nerve injury. It causes severe pain or tingling sensation when the pressure is applied on the site. The neuroma can also be seen post-surgery, generally after the amputation of hands and hernia surgery. Initially, the patient experiences pain only at the site of the neuroma. However, after some time, the other adjacent tissues are also affected and pain may be experienced in the undamaged tissues.

Types Of Neuroma

A neuroma is generally referred to them as benign condition as the malignant condition in such cases is depicted by other names. Following are the different types of neuromas.

Acoustic Neuroma. This type of neuroma affects the hearing and causes imbalance. This is due to the fact that this condition is associated with the nerve that is supplied into the ear. In acoustic neuroma, the tumor is developed on the cochlear nerves, that lead from the inner ear to the brain.

Morton’s Neuroma. Also known as an intratarsal neuroma, this condition affects the ball of the foot. This is caused when the nerve leading to the toe gets inflamed or thickens due to compression or any type of injury. Irritation may also lead to developing Morton’s neuroma.

Ganglioneuroma. Although rare and commonly found in the abdominal area, their neuroma can also find anywhere in the body. The condition is generally asymptomatic and the condition is diagnosed when the patient undergoes diagnosis for any other disease. If the patient experiences the symptoms, it depends upon the area where the ganglioneuroma has developed.

Pacinian Neuroma. This condition is caused due to repeated multiple injuries and trauma on the hand, foot or vulva. This is generally caused due to repeated trauma during working hence also known as an occupational injury.

Traumatic Neuroma. This type of neuroma is caused due to injury or trauma at the time of surgery. This is also known as amputation neuroma or pseudo neuroma.

Conclusion

Methods used to prevent neuroma include wearing proper shoes, taking special care during surgery involving nerves and capping of nerve stump.
