The Psoas Muscle is one of the most important muscles in the human body. Psoas muscle is located in the lower lumbar region and extends through to the pelvis down to the femur.1 The psoas muscle allows an individual to perform activities of daily living like lifting, bending, pushing, and pulling. It also helps an individual to ambulate and run without any problems. Psoas muscle also provides an individual a good posture to sit.

Thus a tight psoas muscle can significantly impact the daily life of an individual. Tight Psoas Muscle is generally found in athletes who are involved with weightlifting, gymnasts, and runners. The psoas muscle also acts as a messenger of the central nervous system and any injury such as tightness of the psoas muscle can affect the way the central nervous system performs and how the body reacts to gravity.

A tight psoas muscle can lead to muscle imbalance which may cause additional problems in other muscle groups as the body tries to compensate for the injured or tight psoas muscle. A tight psoas muscle can also cause severe hip pain which may significantly impact the daily life of an individual. This article gives an overview of some of the presenting features of a tight psoas muscle.

What Are The Presenting Features Of A Tight Psoas Muscle?

The primary presenting feature of a Tight Psoas Muscle is pain and ache around the hip region. This pain tends to be constant but at times may wax and wane. At times, the pain may also radiate down into the buttocks.

A tight psoas muscle may cause restriction in the range of motion of the hip joint and lumbar region. Due to the tightness in the psoas muscle, it will become difficult to move the entire pelvic region as it may cause severe pain due to muscle tightness.

There may also be inflammation of the tendon and iliopsoas bursa which again will cause pain and discomfort due to tightness of the psoas muscle.

An individual with psoas muscle tightness will also have problems moving the thigh backwards while exercising or bringing the thigh towards the chest. He or she may also feel a deep pelvic pain on the side of the muscle that is tight. Chronic constipation is yet another presenting feature of a tight psoas muscle.

An individual may also suffer from a twisted pelvis as a result of a Tight Psoas Muscle. Twisted pelvis is a condition in which the pelvis moves out of its normal anatomical position causing pain in the hip and back. An individual will also experience a deep bellyache as a result of a Tight Psoas Muscle.
