Paget’s disease is a specific kind of neoplastic growth of cancerous cells in the nipple and the adjoining breast areas. It is a rare but serious condition that is almost related to milk duct(ductal) carcinoma or invasive carcinoma.

Since the condition is limited to a surface appearance, it is often dismissed as a disease of the skin without being identified for the underlying cancerous condition.

What Is The Prognosis For Paget’s Disease Of The Breast?

When a patient is affected with this disorder, he/she may notice some changes in the looks of the breast, especially in the nipple. While some cases do not show any symptoms, but the condition continues to progress and can turn chronic to the affected patients. Symptomatic Paget’s disease of the breast can be treated like other breast cancer.

Cancer treatment of the breast generally involves the removal of cancerous cells in the affected region followed by radiation. This is often dependent on location, size, and severity of cancer. Most cancers affect the nipple so in such cases, the treatment may be surgery to remove the nipple and leave behind the unaffected breast.1,2

Managing And Follow-Up After Surgery

When you experience pain or problems it is important to seek immediate medical attention. You can reach out to your doctor or nurse and report on your discomfort and follow the necessary medications thereafter. As an alternative, you can also store a list of medicines based on your test results.

According to NCI’s Surveillance, Epidemiology that a 5-year survival program was carried out in several women who were complaining of Paget’s disease of the breast between 1988 and 2001. The results showed the survival rate decrease as the patients progressed with the stage of cancer. Most recovery was noticed in patients who were treated for stage 1(95.8%) whereas only 14.3% of patients recovered in stage IV of cancer.3

If you have been diagnosed with Paget’s disease of the breast and is turning out to be cancerous, modifying some lifestyle factors may reduce the risk and improve your mental health to a wide extent. Certain lifestyle changes such as reducing alcohol intake and regular exercise may reduce the risk of developing certain types of breast cancer.

There’s no significant path to stay out of cancer, however, some lifestyle modifications can help make it less likely. Cancer days during treatment are intimidating hence these days must be handled with a positive attitude. Center for Disease Control and Protection recommends that these patients must undergo 75 minutes of vigorous physical activity accompanied by two strengthening sessions every week.

  • Have a limit on alcohol levels. Experts suggest that Paget’s patients are not advisable to have more than a drink per day
  • Studies prove that breast-feeding potentially reduces the risk of Paget’s disease of the breast.4,5
