How Long Will It Take To Recover From Ocular Rosacea?

Ocular rosacea cannot be cured completely. The symptoms of the condition can be controlled or managed with the help of certain measures. The time required to manage the symptoms will largely depend upon the duration of the symptoms and also, on the root cause of the condition. In most cases, ocular rosacea stays as a chronic condition. Even if it feels that the condition has gone into remission, it may resurface or reoccur anytime if exposed to the triggers.

How Long Do The Symptoms Of Ocular Rosacea Last?

The signs and symptoms of ocular rosacea may develop before, during or after the skin rosacea develops. They may also start individually, irrespective of whether there is a presence of skin rosacea. The symptoms of ocular rosacea will persist until they are attended to. To minimize, manage or control the symptoms, proper treatment should be carried out.

The signs and symptoms of ocular rosacea may start parallelly with the symptoms of skin rosacea, may start before or even after the development of skin rosacea. They may also develop independently of skin rosacea. The signs and symptoms of this condition may consist of the following –

  • Dryness in the eyes
  • Itchiness of the eyes
  • Burning sensation in the eyes
  • A feeling as if something is stuck in the eyes
  • Blurry vision
  • Photophobia or sensitivity to light
  • Redness of the eyes
  • Swelling in the eyes
  • Excessive tearing
  • Dilatation of the small blood vessels of eyes. These dilated blood vessels can be seen when peeped into the mirror.

The signs and symptoms of ocular rosacea may differ in severity from that of skin rosacea.(2)

Causes Of Ocular Rosacea

The exact explanation behind ocular rosacea is not yet known. Having said that, a few reasons are guessed, and ocular rosacea may emerge as a result of one or multiple of these reasons. These reasons comprise of the following-

  • Hereditarily acquired components or factors
  • Natural or environmental causes
  • Exposure to microbes or bacterial infections
  • A blockage in the glands in eyelids
  • Eyelash mites

A few reasons may aggravate skin rosacea. These variables can escalate ocular rosacea also. These prompting components comprise of the ones given below-

  • Alcoholic drinks
  • Hot and spicy foods and beverages
  • Exposure to intense or harsh sunlight or wind
  • Exposure to extraordinary temperatures
  • Feelings like outrage, stress, shame, humiliation and so on.
  • Excessive physical exercises
  • Sauna showers or showers with intensely heated water
  • A few medications like those that expand the blood vessels(2)

Complications Of Ocular Rosacea

If ocular rosacea is left untreated, it can provoke harm to your cornea. This is especially possible if you experience the impacts of dry eyes due to nonappearance or lack of tears. If the cornea is affected, it may bring about vision issues. Blepharitis or irritation of the eyelids can incite an irritation of the cornea. Damage to the cornea can cause perpetual damage to the vision.(2)

Prognosis Of Ocular Rosacea

Ocular rosacea does not get cured completely. Treatment may help in reducing or controlling the symptoms of this condition. Antibiotics may provide temporary relief.

However, ocular rosacea usually persists as a chronic condition of the eyes and even if it seems to be reducing or regressing, it can reoccur at any time.

Conclusion

Ocular rosacea usually is termed as a chronic condition. Though it seems to be regressing, it may still reoccur at any time.
