MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) infection is caused by a subtype of Staph bacteria. MRSA was less uncommon, but there has been an increasing prevalence of it and it is more common in children. They tend to play and rub on the floor all the time and share toys with fellow members; this increases the risk of infection in children. The bacterium has become resistant to many antibiotics because of inappropriate use.

MRSA signs and symptoms can be seen in the form of redness, pain, and swelling, the skin under the lesion will have a warm temperature. The blisters will be oozing of pus and the treatment of such blister is performed by removing the abscess and prescribing antibiotics. Antibiotics are effective in treating MRSA infections. The infection should ideally get better in 48 hours. The symptoms of MRSA infection should not be ignored as it can result in pneumonia, bloodstream infections, infection in bones and joints. If the symptoms continue to appear after antibiotic treatment also, visit the doctor as he may advise a change in prescription. The worsening of symptoms can be due to improper medication against the instruction. If the symptoms subside during the course of treatment then complete the medications as prescribed. The untreated MRSA can have severe implications which can even be fatal.

Staph infections are very much treatable. The antibiotics will show its efficacy only after the abscess or boil has been drained completely. Do not attempt to get rid of MRSA on self-medication. While attempting to drain the abscess on own, it can result in incomplete drainage and also the risk of another infection due to new cuts done for cleaning. The cleaning is to be performed by sterile medical equipment hence household equipment may not be sterile adding to the infectious condition. Continue taking medications unless your doctor advises to stop taking it. Each individual is different, hence the antibiotic prescribed for one individual may not necessarily helpful in treating other individuals infection as well. Do not save the antibiotics to be used in the future. Each indication requires a specific antibiotic. If you have people with known MRSA infection, request them to visit the healthcare provider soonest, to avoid the spread of infection. The Staph infected skin after draining will leave a deep carve. Topical antibiotics can also be used. MRSA positive cultures define the antibiotics which are effective. Because of increasing resistance to antibiotics there has been increased use of home remedies. Few home remedies are-

  • Tea tree oil possesses the anti-bacterial property and reduces inflammation and analgesic properties against MRSA infected wounds
  • Garlic is composed of allicin, which is the active compound responsible for antibiotic property
  • Oregano Oil possesses anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial properties. The oil also has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties.
  • Aloe vera is used to treat antibiotic-resistant infections and also promotes the healing of wounds. It has antibacterial and antimicrobial property.
  • Turmeric has been traditionally used for its antiseptic properties and is a powerful immune stimulant
  • Eucalyptus oil has antibacterial properties and improves the immune system
  • Green tea (Camellia sinensis) and chocolate are composed of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) which decreases the resistance of MRSA and helps in reducing infection.

Good hygiene habits can be a boon for the prevention of MRSA infection. People living in crowded places are more likely to develop MRSA infection. Prevention is better than cure. Take all the preventive measures such as washing your hands with clean running water with soap. Get good lather on the hands and rinse-off the soap. Regularly washing hands after coming to the house can help prevent infection. Alcohol-based sanitizers can be quite helpful as they claim to possess good antibacterial property.

Conclusion

MRSA infections are 100% curable. Although resistance has been developed for Staph, certain antibiotics are still effective. Follow doctor prescription and complete all the antibiotics even if the symptoms have improved. Home remedies such as turmeric, oregano oil, aloe vera, green tea, and chocolates can also be used for MRSA infection.
