Osgood schlatter condition is a common disorder and is also easily treatable with conservative measures in most of the cases. The initial step in its treatment is the PRICE method. It comprises of pain relief, rest, ice, compression and elevation of the affected limb. It is done for nearly about a week because most of the inflammatory process is ongoing at the site and gets resolved in a week.(1)

After its resolution, the rehabilitation process begins to regain the power of limb and improve the condition. It can be done with the help of various exercises, activities, yoga or taping methods that not only provide rehabilitation but also helps in improving the strength of limb.

The most common activity to start with is taping the legs and knee joint along with exercises for the affected limb. KT tape is also known as Kinesiology tape is a very efficient method in relieving the pain and providing the required strength to the muscle if there is a weakness or reducing the tightness of the muscle if there is rigidity. It provides the sensory input from the skin to relieve the pain and get stretched according to the need of the individual. If it is applied without stretching then it also can turn off the muscle and reduce its tension. It provides the base to start for exercises of the rehabilitation process.(2)

Straight leg raises are the commonest exercise recommended because of its effect on the condition. In this exercise, the patient is asked to elevate the limb straight without bending the knee to a height of about 12 inches from the ground. This is done for 10 to 15 repetitions in the set of 2. The repetition and sets can be increased accordingly.

Few other exercises are also recommended like short arc quadriceps for quadriceps release, wall slides or quarter squats for strengthening the hamstrings and gastrocnemius muscle. Similar repetitions and sets can be performed for these exercises also.(3)

Yoga is also a great conservative method to deal with such a condition that could be easily resolved conservatively. Various yoga poses are beneficial in strengthening the knee joint and relieving the tension from the surrounding group of muscles. Few of the poses are lunges that carry the weight of the body on the knees progressively, standing balancing pose which helps to increase the flexibility of quadriceps, warrior pose, etc. To increase the flexibility of the thigh muscle poses like pigeon pose, fire lo g pose, child pose, Lotus pose can also be practiced.

Another amazing thing in the yoga practice is ‘sukhamat’.(4) It is a Sanskrit word which means soothing mat. It is a yoga mat commonly used by its practicians which has an adequate amount of smoothness and toughness at the same time to relieve the knee as well as toughen it up.

Osgood schlatter condition is commonly found in young age group and it occurs due to some precipitating cause like sporting and stressful activities as in the case of professional sports like gymnastics, athletics, etc. Since it occurs at a very young age, it could easily be cured without any residual damage left after its treatment.

After the initial conservative treatment with the help of KT taping and PRICE methodology, the rehabilitation process can be started with the help of various activities, exercises, and yoga which will fasten its recovery process.

Yoga provides a lot of scope in the improvement of knee strength and recovery of the ongoing process of inflammation. Rehabilitation with exercises is followed very carefully and its intensity is kept low initially to reduce the chances of further damage.
