Metabolic syndrome is a group of risk factors that can cause heart disease, stroke and type 2diabetes. It is also known as insulin resistance syndrome, syndrome X and dysmetabolic syndrome. It is marked by elevated blood pressure, high blood sugar, high cholesterol levels, high triglyceride levels and excess deposited fat around the waist.1

Aggressive lifestyle, aging, smoking, alcoholism, genetic history, and obesity are the main cause of this syndrome. Modification of lifestyle, regular exercise, and cessation of smoking and alcoholism can remarkably improve the condition and is considered the most effective treatment.

According to American heart association, a person will have metabolic syndrome if he has three of the following symptoms-

  • The waist circumference, that symbolizes abdominal or central or visceral obesity, is more than 40 inches in men and more than 35 inches in women and it can be a symptom.
  • The triglyceride levels are high (150 mg/dL) and HDL levels (good cholesterol) are low (40 mg/dL) in the blood.
  • The blood pressure is consistently high 140/90 mmHg or higher.
  • Blood sugar levels are at higher levels (100 mg/dL) for a long time. This is also called insulin resistance.
  • There is an increased risk of developing blood clots like deep vein thrombosis.
  • There are frequent incidences of inflammation in the body leading to swelling and irritation.2

Metabolic syndrome is a group of condition that increases the possibility of having heart disease, stroke, and Type 2 diabetes. It is a cluster of risk factors characterized by elevated glucose level in fasting, high blood pressure, increased waist circumference which raises the risk of cardiovascular diseases. This syndrome is also given the name such as insulin resistance syndrome, syndrome X and dysmetabolic syndrome.3 It is called insulin resistance syndrome because the body is unable to use insulin to reduce the levels of glucose and triglyceride. This syndrome damages the blood vessels and can cause life.threatening consequences.

Metabolic Syndrome Causes

Its exact cause is not known. Overweight, abdominal obesity and inactive lifestyle are considered to be linked with metabolic syndrome. Insulin resistance also leads to building up of glucose and triglyceride in the blood. It can be another cause of this syndrome.

Family history and genetic predisposition to diabetes or gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy) can elevate the chances of developing metabolic syndrome.4

Race. people belonging to Asian and African Caribbean people have more tendencies to develop metabolic syndrome.

Lifestyle. heavy smoking and alcohol consumption increase the risk of metabolic syndrome. A sedentary lifestyle can also trigger the syndrome. Regular consumption of High carbohydrate diet is also a risk factor.

Obesity. having too much weight, especially centered in the abdomen has a higher risk to develop metabolic syndrome.

Other Diseases. people who have cardiovascular disease, polycystic ovary syndrome, non.alcoholic fatty liver disease can develop metabolic syndrome.
