How Effective is Jentadueto?

Jentadueto is a medicine that comes with the combination of metformin and linagliptin. These two combination medicines are used for effective treatment of diabetes medicine which helps to maintain blood sugar levels. Linagliptin is effective in regulating the insulin levels throughout the body after eating a meal while Metformin is effective in lowering glucose production in the body mainly liver and also helping intestines to absorb glucose very less.

This medicine jentadueto is used along with good exercise and proper diet to improve and control blood sugar levels mainly in adults. This medicine is for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Jentadueto is not for the treatment of Type 1 diabetes.

How Effective is Jentadueto?

Do not take jentadueto if you have any allergies to metformin (fortamet, actoplus met, glucophage riomet, avandamet, linagliptin, or if suffering from severe kidney disease, if you have had severe allergic reactions to linagliptin (Tradjenta). Allergies include severe skin rash, swelling, breathing problem. If you are suffering from diabetic ketoacidosis then get immediate medical assistance.

If you have diabetic ketoacidosis or severe kidney diseases you should not take jentadueto and you should talk to your physician for a better and effective treatment.

There are cases when people taking metformin had developed lactic acidosis. The initial symptoms can get worse on longer time and can make it very serious. If you have any of these following symptoms or allergies while having jentadueto you should get immediate medical assistance and stop having jentadueto. The allergies and conditions are trouble breathing, feeling tired or weak, weakness, muscle pain, nausea, etc.

It is important to tell your physician about your previous medical history especially any disease related to heart condition, any serious liver disease, pancreatitis, a serious infection, etc. Also, if you are above of 80 years who age and have not yet done any test of kidney function.

You will have to stop taking jentadueto if you are planning to have a cataract surgery or any kind of CT scan or X-ray, you will need to stop taking jentadueto for some time to make it effective and better for you or if you have any kind of liver condition, heart disease, heart attack

Points to Know Before Taking Jentadueto

There are a lot of cases in which people taking jentadueto has had lactic acidosis which is a serious medical condition. This is more in people who suffer from kidney or liver diseases, any severe infection, heart attack or heart failure, congestive heart failure, etc. This condition has also been seen in people who are above 65 years of age and also if you are dehydrated and also in people who consume a lot of alcohol. Therefore it is important to discuss the risk of having this medicine to your physician.

In order to make jentadueto safe, you must inform your physician if you have any of the following medical conditions:

  • Heart disease
  • Kidney disease (kidney functions are tested and checked prior to taking this medicine)
  • Gallstones
  • Pancreatitis
  • Liver disease
  • If you are above 80 years old and haven’t checked kidney functions lately
  • High consumption of alcohol
  • High triglycerides ( this is a kind of fat present in the blood)

You will have to stop taking jentadueto if you are to take an X-ray, have a surgery or even take a CT scan that mainly uses a dye which is injected into your body. This is important for you to tell your caregivers or physicians about jentadueto you are taking and also about its risks.

It is very important to tell your physician if you are planning to become pregnant or are pregnant at the time of treatment. It is important to careful follow physician’s instructions as during pregnancy period it is important to maintain blood sugar levels. Physician might change your jentadueto dosage levels too since your breast feeding the dosage required will change frequently.

Tell your physician if you are breast feeding a child as it is unknown if jentadueto passes through breast milk to the baby.

Jentadueto is not for people below 18 years of age as it is not approved for their usage.

What is the Recommended Dosage of Jentadueto?

Jentadueto for the Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes – General Adult Dosage

Jentadueto Linagliptin – Metformin tablets – Immediate Release

  • Starting dosage of metformin for patients not receiving it: 2.5 milligrams linagliptin or 500 milligrams metformin two times a day orally
  • Start dosage of metformin for patients receiving it: 2.5 milligrams linagliptin with combination of metformin one-half of current dosage two times a day orally.
  • Start dosage of metformin and linagliptin for patients receiving both individually: Can switch to combination medicines which contains same required dosages of each medicine two times a day orally.

Maintenance dosage: Depending on efficacy and safety individualize dosage.

Maximum dosage: Metformin 2000 milligrams per day and linagliptin 5 milligrams per day.

Linagliptin – Metformin Tablets – Extended Release:

  • Start dosage of metformin for patients not receiving it: 5 milligrams linagliptin or 1000 milligrams metformin two times a day orally
  • Start dosage of metformin for patients receiving it: 5 milligrams linagliptin with combination of metformin daily dosage two times a day orally
  • Start dosage of metformin and linagliptin for patients receiving both individually: Can switch to combination medicines which contains same required dosages of each medicine two times a day orally.

Maintenance dosage: Depending on efficacy and safety individualize dosage.

Maximum dosage: Metformin 2000 milligrams per day and linagliptin 5 milligrams per day.

It is important for patients to take both the tablets together if their intake dosages are metformin 1000 milligrams and linagliptin 2.5milligrams in extended release tablets.
When these medicines are taken along with insulin secretagogue or insulin, it is important to take lower dosage levels of insulin which will help prevent the risk of hypoglycemia.

Jentadueto is taken to effectively improve glycemic levels in patients suffering from Diabetes mellitus Type -2 along with exercise and proper diet.

What are the Side Effects of Jentadueto?

It is important to get immediate medical assistance if you are allergic to jentadueto. In normal cases, the allergies will be swelling of tongue, face, throat, lips, having hard time in breathing or hives.

In case you experience any of these it is important to stop taking jentadueto and call your physician, loss of appetite, vomiting, nausea, severe pain in upper stomach that spreads to your back, fast heartbeats.

It is common for some patients to have lactic acidosis while taking jentadueto. The symptoms might get worse on regular usage and it can become fatal. Therefore, even if you have mild symptoms of this condition get immediate help. Most symptoms are:

  • Trouble breathing
  • Uneven or slow heart rate
  • Weakness or muscle pain
  • Light headed, very weak, feeling dizzy, tired
  • Cold or numb feeling on legs and arms.

Get immediate medical assistance if you have these severe side effects of jentadueto:

  • Rapid weight gain or swelling
  • Severe autoimmune reaction – blisters, itching, breakdown of skin (outer layer)
  • Severe skin reactions – burning in eyes, swelling in tongue or face, sore throat, fever, skin pain, rashes (pink or red colour) on the skin that spread causing peeling and blistering (mainly upper body)
  • Regular pain in joints.
