The physician may also order X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans to look at the internal structures of the back in case if the pain does not go away on its own or with conservative treatments.

- Ice Application: Use of ice or cold packs to the area for about 15-20 minutes at least two to three times a day to calm down the swelling and inflammation. It can also be done after strenuous activity.
- Heat Application: After applying ice for a couple of days, heat treatments can be started. This needs to be started after the swelling has calmed down.
- Medications: Use of pain medications like ibuprofen can be beneficial. NSAIDs like Motrin or Aleve also can help with pain in the back. These medications tend to have side effects hence a physician’s advice is recommended before beginning medications.
- Support: A back support can also be used for pain relief and to provide support to the back but a therapist needs to be consulted first before choosing the type of support.
- Therapy: Physical therapy is paramount to gain back the strength of the back muscles.

- Reduce the workout regime if there is production of back pain.

- When picking something up, try not to bend the waist but bend the knees.
- Weight loss in case of obesity.
- Maintain adequate posture so that there is no pressure in the back muscles.
