Home Remedies for Knee Bursitis

Knee Bursitis is a pathological condition of the knees in which the bursa located under the knee joint gets inflamed causing pain, swelling, and difficulty with ambulation. The bursa is a fluid filled sac located under the joints which acts as a lubricant or a cushion between the bone and the tendon. Knee Bursitis tends to cause severe pain and limited mobility of the joint resulting in an individual finding it difficult to walk and carry out activities of daily living at home or at work efficiently.

Knee Bursitis is a painful condition and can render an individual disabled with the inability to walk. There are various treatment options available to treat Knee Bursitis. Also, there are some home remedies which are quite effective in treating Knee Bursitis. The home remedies for treating Knee Bursitis are:

Cold Compresses: This is quite a common home remedy for treating Knee Bursitis. Cold Compresses cools the injured area down and thus calms down the swelling and reduces the pain associated with knee bursitis. It also helps to get rid of the redness around the knee joint and calms down the inflammation. Cold Compresses are most effective if used within 48 hours post injury. All you need to do is wrap a few ice cubes in a towel and put the ice pack on the affected area for about 15-20 minutes. It should be noted here that ice should never be put directly over the injured site as it may cause blisters. Do this at least three times a day.

Warm Compresses: This is also quite an effective home remedy for conditions like Knee Bursitis. Warm compresses can be used once the initial swelling and pain has calmed down a bit. These help improve blood flow, reduces stiffness of the knees and calms down the inflammation. You need to soak a towel in lukewarm water and apply it on the affected area for 15-20 minutes two to three times a day. Alternatively, a heating pad can also be used as Warm Compress for treatment of Knee Bursitis.

Massage Therapy: Massaging the knee for treatment of Knee Bursitis is quite effective. Massage not only helps in reducing discomfort but it also reduces swelling and stiffness of the joints. For this, all you need to do is take some warm coconut oil and apply it on the affected area. Now, massage the area gently for about 15 minutes. Now wrap the area with a dry towel. Repeat this about four times a day till you get relief from pain and swelling due to Knee Bursitis.

Castor Oil: This is yet another good home remedy for treating Knee Bursitis. Castor oil helps in reducing pain and swelling and calming down the inflammation. Castor oil contains ricinoleic which has antiinflammatory properties which calms down the inflammation caused due to Knee Bursitis. You need to soak a linen cloth in castor oil and apply it gently on the affected area. Now place a heating pad over it and leave it as is for about half an hour. Gently clean the area with warm water and pat it dry. Do this about four times a week for optimal relief from Knee Bursitis.

Ginger: Ginger has been one of the most ancient home remedies for various ailments and Knee Bursitis is no exception. Ginger has natural pain relieving properties and helps in getting rid of pain caused due to Knee Bursitis. It also has plenty of antiinflammatory and analgesic properties which fight off inflammation and reduce swelling and inflammation associated with knee bursitis. It also facilitates faster healing of knee bursitis since it improves blood circulation. To use it, grate about 4 tablespoons of ginger and wrap it in a cloth tightly. Immerse the cloth in hot water for about a minute. After waiting for some time to allow the cloth to cool down put this cloth on the affected area for 15-20 minutes. Repeat this about three times a day for optimal relief.

Apple Cider Vinegar: This is also a very effective natural treatment Knee Bursitis. It helps in reducing inflammation and thus calms down the pain and discomfort caused due to Knee Bursitis. You need to soak a towel in Apple Cider Vinegar and wrap the towel around the knee for a few hours everyday for best results. You can also mix a tablespoon of raw Apple Cider Vinegar with honey and drink this solution two times a day for best relief from Knee Bursitis.

Turmeric: Turmeric is also a very ancient home remedy useful for treating various ailments like Knee Bursitis. The curcumin present in turmeric which gives it its color is a very potent antiinflammatory agent and thus is very helpful in calming down pain, swelling, and inflammation. You need to take a teaspoon of turmeric powder in a glass of milk. Mix it thoroughly and add some honey to it. Drink this solution for a few days and you will get relief from Knee Bursitis. It should be noted here that people who are on blood thinners should take turmeric with caution and take the advice of a physician since turmeric may interfere with the functioning of blood thinners.
