Elbow Bursitis is a pathological condition in which there is an inflammation of the bursa in the elbow. The bursa is a fluid filled sac located just under the elbow joint which acts as a cushion or a lubricant between the bone and the tendons. Elbow Bursitis may be caused due to a number of reasons of which the primary reason is a direct blow or injury to the elbow area. This injury can be due to a motor vehicle crash or it can be a sporting injury caused while playing contact sports.

Home Remedies for Elbow Bursitis

Elbow Bursitis is a painful condition and there are many different ways to treat them but below mentioned are some of the common home remedies to treat Elbow Bursitis. These home remedies are:

Cold Compresses: This is quite a common home remedy for treating many injuries and conditions and Elbow Bursitis is no exception. Cold Compresses tend to cool the area down thus calming down the swelling and reducing the pain. It also helps to get rid of the redness around the elbow joint and also calms down the inflammation. Cold Compresses are most effective if used within the first two days of the injury. All you have to do is wrap a few ice cubes in a towel and put the ice pack on the affected area for about 15-20 minutes. It should be noted here that ice should never be put directly over the injured site as it may cause blisters. Do this at least three times in a day.

Warm Compresses: This is also an effective home remedy not only for elbow bursitis but also for various other conditions and injuries. Warm compresses can be used after about two days postinjury. These help improve blood flow, reduces stiffness of the elbows and calms down the inflammation. Damp a towel in lukewarm water and apply it at the affected area for 15-20 minutes two to three times a day. A heating pad can also be used as Warm Compress for treatment of Elbow Bursitis.

Massage Therapy: This is another effective home remedy for treating Elbow Bursitis. Massage not only helps in reducing the discomfort but it also reduces swelling and stiffness of the joints. For this, all you need to do is take some warm coconut oil and apply it on the affected area. Now, massage the area with gentle pressure for about 15 minutes and then wrap the elbow with a dry towel. Repeat this about four times a day till you get relief.

Castor Oil: Castor oil helps in reducing pain and swelling and calming down the inflammation making it a useful home remedy for elbow bursitis. Castor oil contains ricinoleic which has antiinflammatory properties which calms down the inflammation caused due to Elbow Bursitis. You need to soak a silk cloth in castor oil and apply it gently on the affected area. Now place a heating pad over it and leave it as is for about half an hour. Now gently clean the area with warm water and pat it dry. Do this about four times a week for optimal relief from Elbow Bursitis.

Ginger: Ginger has been one of the most ancient home remedies for various ailments. Ginger has natural pain relieving properties and helps in getting rid of pain caused due to Elbow Bursitis. It also has plenty of antiinflammatory and analgesic properties which fight off inflammation and reduce swelling and inflammation. It also facilitates faster healing since it improves blood circulation. Grate about 4 tablespoons of ginger and wrap it in a cloth tightly. Immerse the cloth in hot water for about a minute. After waiting for some time to allow the cloth to cool down, put this cloth on the affected area for 15-20 minutes. Repeat this about three times a day for optimal relief.

Apple Cider Vinegar: One can make use of apple cider vinegar to treat elbow bursitis naturally at home. It helps in reducing inflammation and thus calms down the pain and discomfort caused due to Elbow Bursitis. You need to soak a towel in Apple Cider Vinegar and wrap the towel around the elbow for a few hours everyday for best results. You can also mix a tablespoon of raw Apple Cider Vinegar with honey and drink this solution two times a day for best relief from Elbow Bursitis.

Turmeric: Curcumin present in turmeric which gives it its color is a very potent antiinflammatory agent and thus is very helpful home remedy in calming down pain, swelling, and inflammation associated with elbow bursitis. You need to take a teaspoon of turmeric powder in a glass of milk. Mix it thoroughly and add some honey to it. Drink this solution for a few days and you will get relief from Elbow Bursitis. It should be noted here that people who are on blood thinners should take turmeric with caution and take the advice of the physician since turmeric may interfere with its functioning.

White Willow Bark: This is an effective herbal remedy. This herb contains a compound called salicin which is very good at pain relief and also reducing swelling and inflammation making it a useful remedy to treat elbow bursitis at home. You need to add a teaspoon of White Willow Bark in a cup of water and boil it for about 15 minutes. Filter this solution such that you get a solution and then drink it at least twice a day for best relief from Elbow Bursitis.
