Do Antibiotics Cure Nasal Polyps?

Nasal polyps are common teardrop or grape shaped growth that develops in the sinuses or nose. Many investigations are conducted to find a permanent cure to this problem but none was proven successful yet they can be treated through medications.

In the worst-case scenario, patients may require surgery to remove the inflamed polyps. Nevertheless, it purely depends on the severity of the condition. Studies were conducted to determine the rate of complications of surgery in three thousand and odd patients and the clinical reports concluded that the risk of complications depended on patient characteristics rather than on the surgical treatments.

Do Antibiotics Cure Nasal Polyps?

In chronic sinusitis patients who develop an episode of sinus polyps, an inflammatory condition is required to undergo short term antibiotic treatment. The primary goal of antibiotic treatment is to reduce the size of the polyps besides eliminating them completely. Medical treatment usually starts with drugs that make the polyps shrink or disappear.

Nasal Corticosteroids- A nasal corticosteroid spray shrinks the swelling and creates a passage for normal breathing. Although it takes a little longer for the steroid spray to build its full effect, still you can get the maximum benefit out of it.

Using Corticosteroid Nasal Spray: The patients may require to prime the spray before they use it in order to get the right amount of medicine. However, instructions for use are clearly provided on the label. It is often recommended to clear your nostrils before you use the spray to get immediate relief from congestion.

Oral Anti-Staphylococcal Antibiotics- The oral corticosteroids simulate the effect of hormones in your body and reduce the activity of the immune system. This, in turn, decreases the inflammation that is caused due to foreign substances like bacteria and viruses.

Prednisone is the most common corticosteroid tablet taken orally to combat the symptoms of nasal polyps. Oral medications are suggested only when nasal spray failed to improve the conditions. However, oral medicine causes serious side effects such as osteoporosis, hypertension, weight gain, eye disorders and more. Therefore, you can use only for a limited period. However, when the conditions are very severe, then intravenous antibiotics will be used.

Nasal polyps can also be treated using antihistamines and aspirin but these medications should be taken under the supervision of your health care specialist. These medications can produce transient benefits to the patients because of their anti-inflammatory properties. (1)

Some patients opt for polyps surgery looking for a permanent cure but still, it doesn’t provide permanent solutions and polyps tend to occur. And when there a recurrence occurs after surgery; the size of the polyps can be larger than before.

Although there are quite a number of reasons for their occurrence the primary factor behind this condition is due to the irritation and inflammation of the nasal lining and the fluid accumulation in the cells. When you can sort out the problem causing this inflammation, you can effectively control them and can get rid of this condition permanently. (2)
