Apple cider vinegar, sometimes called ACV, is a type of vinegar prepared from fermented apple cider. It is one of the most popular dietary intakes of the health-conscious population across the globe. A lot has been said about the health benefits of this hazy, fibrous liquid. It is rich in strong probiotics and yeast. Many individuals often include Apple cider vinegar in weight loss programs.(1) However, currently, we are trying to analyze the effect of apple cider vinegar in controlling cholesterol.

Before we try to answer this question, let us first understand a little about cholesterol and its types. Two types of cholesterols are found in the blood – LDL and HDL. Both these cholesterols are formed in the liver or develop in the body from external sources like intake of unsaturated fatty acid. LDL or Low-density lipoprotein is known as bad cholesterol. It creates plaques in the arteries increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke. On the other hand, HDL of High-density lipoprotein can absorb the bad cholesterol and send it back to the liver.(1, 2)

It means control of cholesterol is possible if the excess fat in the body is burnt and the liver produces a low volume of cholesterol or produces more HDL. Apple cider vinegar can help in both the situations.

  • Apple cider vinegar can activate the enzyme called activated protein kinase that can stimulate the burning of fat at a faster rate.(2, 4)
  • Apple cider vinegar also activates those genes that help to burn the excess fat in the body.(3)
  • Apple cider vinegar reduces the production of lipid from the liver and the accumulation of lipid molecules in the body.(1, 5)
  • Consuming a limited quantity of apple cider vinegar regularly helps your liver to produce greater amounts of high-density cholesterol.(1)

Ongoing Research

Most of the conclusions that have been reached to favor the conclusion have been done based on observation and research on human samples or animals. A lot of experimentation and investigation is currently under process, to establish the real facts. Dieticians and nutritionists opine that including apple cider vinegar in your diet can be a good way of keeping your cholesterol under check. However, following this regime alone will not be of much help. Apart from apple cider vinegar, you must also have a balanced diet that should include good fats, a high protein diet, fruits, vegetables, fiber, etc. Intake of sugar and dairy fats must be low. A healthy lifestyle with balanced sleep and physical activity is also needed.(6)

Conclusion

One must be careful about the way they are planning to have the apple cider vinegar as it can otherwise prove to be harmful to the teeth. You can have it in the form of liquid or even as tablets. If you are planning to have it in its liquid form, then you must mix it in water and then have it as a single go. Do not sip on the mixture.
