Cyst on knuckle, also called ganglion cyst, is a fairly common condition that affects many people. It usually occurs due to inflammation of the hair follicles. Inside the cyst is a colorless, thick, sticky and jelly type viscous synovial fluid. Depending on the size of cysts, they may feel hard and spongy. Ganglion cyst may be present on the finger, palm or as a cyst on knuckle.

It may initially appear as small cysts, which may eventually combine to form a large cyst on knuckle like a ganglion cyst. Cyst on knuckle may be seen more commonly in women and in people between ages 20-40.

Causes of Cyst Knuckle

The exact cause of cyst on knuckle is not clear, but studies suggest that trauma to the underlying soft tissues can cause small cysts, which eventually combine to form a large cyst. Problem in the tendon sheath can also cause bulging of the tissue, leading to formation of a cyst on knuckle.

Symptoms of Cyst Knuckle

In many cases, cyst on knuckle may not show any symptoms, other than their typical appearance. The cyst is usually soft to touch and immovable. The size may range between 1-3 cm in the total diameter. Cyst on knuckle can erupt all of a sudden or may appear gradually. Similarly this swelling may sometimes subside on its own and also recur, without any noticeable cause.

  • Pain is a common symptom of cyst on knuckle, which is particularly more when the joint is moved. Pain is also felt with acute or repetitive trauma of hand and fingers.
  • Since the cyst gets connected with the tendon, you might also feel a sense of weakness in the affected finger.
  • The finger, knuckle, wrist or hand may feel sore making it difficult to perform hand related activities.

Cyst on knuckle can be managed with home remedies and proper care. However, if the symptoms are severe or unbearable, it is advisable to seek medical opinion for treatment of cyst on knuckle. Some home remedies and basic home care tips may be helpful.

Avoid injuries on fingers and hand since this might worsen the cyst. If the cyst on knuckle can be seen with a yellowish fluid inside, try heat compression on the affected area for draining the sebum naturally. Picking the cyst by hand can lead to bacterial infection so refrain from it. Do not frequently touch the cyst and always wash hands with antibacterial soap after touching it.

Here are some of the most effective home remedies for treatment of cyst on knuckle.

Warm Compression – Pain and discomfort due to cyst on knuckle can be minimized by giving a warm compression to the affected area since the warm sensation would enhance the blood circulation in the hand and promote fluid drainage. Although, it cannot stop cyst growth, it can provide great relief by reducing swelling and pain.

Ginger – The anti-inflammatory property of ginger helps to relieve pain, swelling and reduces inflammation to a great extent. Ginger is a popular home remedy for cyst on knuckle and can be used in teas, soups, salads or any preparation you like. Ginger can also be taken by mixing a few drops of ginger juice or dry ginger powder in honey to enjoy great results. Ginger supplements are also available, which can be taken with medical advice.

Black Tea Bags – The application of black tea bags, probably prevents the worsening of the cyst on knuckle. The anti- inflammatory nature of the tea provides relief from swelling and pain. It is one of the best home remedies for cyst on knuckle. Take a tea bag dipped in hot water, squeeze it and use the moist, warm tea bag for fomentation. Hold it over the cyst area for few minutes and repeat it two to three times in a day.

Frankincense Oil – This oil is a great home remedy for cyst on knuckle, which helps to reduce pain and inflammation, minimize the size of cyst and prevent its recurrence. One or two drops of frankincense oil can be put on the cyst and wrapped with a clean bandage every day. With regular use for few weeks, this wonder remedy will help to reduce the cyst on knuckle.

There are various other home remedies for cyst on knuckle, which you can use, if possible

  • Rub castor oil on the cyst on knuckle to find relief in your symptoms.
  • Put few drops of witch hazel extract on the cyst every day, for few days.
  • Place a cotton dipped in apple cider vinegar on the cyst on knuckle for 20 minutes. Repeat it few times in a day for some days.
  • Apply freshly extract aloe vera gel and then wash off after 20 minutes. Apply this two to three times in a day for few days.

Apart from this, following a healthy and anti-inflammatory diet can help a lot. Take fresh fruits and vegetables, berries, nuts, almonds, flaxseeds, olive oil, salmon, ginger, green tea, etc. to reduce inflammation. Drink plenty of water to flush out toxins from your body.
