Molar pregnancy is a form of pregnancy in which a group of abnormal cells grows in the uterus instead of a viable fetus in a pregnancy period. These abnormal cells are called hydatidiform mole. It is formed due to deletion or inactivity of chromosomes of the mother during fertilization of the ovum. The mole contains all the chromosomes of the father. Its symptoms are same as that of normal pregnancy. In some cases, excess morning sickness, vaginal bleeding, and abnormal abdominal growth may be occurring.   • Levels of hCG
  • Presence of large-sized ovarian cysts
  • Trimester at which Diagnosis is made
  • Type of pregnancy normal, molar or missed abortion
  • Previous history of molar pregnancy or gestational trophoblastic tumors
  • The desire of the mother to conceive more children

Molar pregnancy can be treated by following ways-

Dilation And Curettage– this procedure is focused on the removal of the mole from the uterus. This procedure is done in a hospital as an outpatient procedure. The uterus is dilated with special tools and abnormal tissues are removed from the uterus through the vagina. This procedure is also called D & C. It is often done by giving the patient general anesthesia. The patient is discharged on the same day. It is the best treatment of molar pregnancy if the patient wants to conceive again.

Chemotherapy – in cases where molar pregnancy has features of good prognosis, single medicines are prescribed to treat them. In those cases where is chances of development of invasive tumors with poor prognosis, multiple drugs are prescribed.

Hysterectomy – this is a rare form of treatment selected for women who do not want conceive again, the uterus is entirely removed with surgery.

Radiation Therapy– this therapy uses high-strength X-rays beams to kill cancer cells developed from a hydatidiform mole.

Diagnosis of molar pregnancy can be established by following tests-

Blood Tests– levels of human chorionic gonadotrophin in blood are measured in routine pregnancy tests. Its high levels are seen in molar pregnancy. However, in some molar pregnancies, HCG does not rise too high.

Ultrasound Scan– ultrasound scan confirms molar pregnancy and the presence of mole with images of the content in the uterus.

X-rays, CT Scan And MRI Scan– this helps to find out the possibility of migration of molar cells to the chest, abdomen, brain, and pelvis.
