Diarrhea & Its Symptoms

Diarrhea is characterized by frequent bowel movements with loose and watery stool. Diarrhea is a very common condition affecting people once or twice in a year and it usually lasts for about 3 days. People with some other medical condition, such as irritable bowel syndrome or Crohn’s disease, may experience diarrhea more regularly.

Along with frequent loose stool, other symptoms experienced by a person suffering from diarrhea are. stomach cramps, pain in abdomen, fever, nausea, vomiting, fetid stool, flatulence and urgency for bowel movement.

Diet plays a major role in controlling or managing the symptoms of diarrhea, as any kind of infection causing diarrhea is contracted through contaminated food and water.

How To Stop Diarrhea Quickly?

Diarrhea can be corrected by taking anti-diarrheal medications. But there are certain steps which if taken can help prevent or resolve diarrhea early and quickly.

Drink Plenty of Water. Frequent watery stool leads to loss of fluid from our body and can cause dehydration. Keeping up the water levels in the body, therefore, is very important. Drinking fluid in the form of water, juices, and also electrolyte solution like Gatorade and Pedialyte, help overcome dehydration and helps in quick relief from diarrhea.

Probiotics to Quickly Stop Diarrhea. Probiotics is another most important thing that can be taken to shorten the duration of diarrhea. Probiotics contain healthy bacteria, which strengthen the digestive health. Yogurt is the easily available probiotic products and can help shorten the diarrhea by a day.

Bland Food for Quick Relief from Diarrhea. A food which is low in fiber, bland and starchy can help replace the lost nutrients and also firm the stool. The BRAT diet comprising of bananas, rice, apple, and applesauce is considered the best diet to fight diarrhea and stop diarrhea rapidly. Just like eating probiotics shortens the duration of diarrhea, so does the BRAT diet help in giving quick relief from diarrhea.

Consult a Doctor for Speedy Recovery from Diarrhea. If your diarrhea lasts for more than two days and you are experiencing pain in abdomen and rectum, suffering from high fever or having a bloody and black tar-like stool, it is important that you seek medical help ASAP.

Avoid These Foods to Stop Diarrhea Quickly

The above foods elaborated would surely help in controlling the symptoms of diarrhea and even would help it to resolve early. There are certain foods, if not stopped while suffering from loose bowel movement could aggravate diarrhea.

Do Not Eat Fried Food in Diarrhea. Any kind of oily and fried food can worsen diarrhea. Such food is difficult to digest and during diarrhea condition, the stomach is already very sensitive. Therefore fried food should not be consumed when suffering from loose stools or diarrhea.

Have Diarrhea? Avoid High-Fiber Foods. Fiber keeps the digestive system active and also the bowel movements, which is not required when a person is suffering from diarrhea. Fiber-rich food includes whole grains (such as wheat rice, barley), cereals, grain bread, and baked goods, nuts, and seeds; and these foods should be strictly avoided if you want quick relief from diarrhea.

Avoid Processed & Packaged Food during Diarrhea. Processed and packaged foods in themselves are not healthy for consumption. When suffering from diarrhea, the stomach is already in a very weak state. This difficult to digest processed food should not be consumed, as they can worsen the diarrhea.

Suffering from Diarrhea? Stay Away from Caffeinated Drinks. Caffeinated beverages over-stimulate the digestive system making the symptoms of diarrhea worse. Caffeinated beverages include coffee, tea, and soda and are a strict No-No when suffering from diarrhea.

People suffering from diarrhea should avoid putting the body in a situation, which would worsen their condition. They should take plenty of rest so that the body recovers from diarrhea early.
