A variety of pimples, whiteheads, blackheads or cysts together get the skin condition known as Acne. There are some foods like dark chocolate, which can trigger breakouts if an individual has acne. However, this depends on person to person. It is also known that some ingredients like sugar and fat in dark chocolates can exacerbate some of the causes of pimples or acne. However, it is not true that dark chocolate may cause pimples.

As per the AOCD, American Osteopathic College of Dermatology; chocolate is one amongst the foods which triggers acne breakouts, pimples, etc. It is found that in 100 grams of dark chocolate with 70 to 85% of cocoa solids, about 24 grams of sugar is present and also 5 grams of saturated fats are found. As it is known that sugar and fats are the worst ingredients that increase insulin levels, cause inflammation in the body, and make your acne or pimples worse.

In one more study published in the journal “BMC Public Health” during the year 2009, researchers from the University of Oslo investigated the association between diet and acne and mental distress in adolescents aged between 18 to 19 years. It was found that there is a significant link between frequent consumption of sweets or chocolates and acne. However, there are more studies essential for the same.

Thus, if you have acne or pimples, then to keep away from making your pimples more worse, it is better to reduce intake of dark chocolates in your diet. You can keep a diary to track your acne breakouts or pimples after eating foods like chocolate in case you suspect it to be a trigger for your pimples. However, it is essential for you to speak to your doctor or dietician on this regard.
