Smelly armpits or Underarm odour is a major turn-off. Sweat-stained shirts and the pungent odour coming from the armpits are immediate reminders of the rising temperature. Although sweat does not smell any better during winters, it is surely worst in summers. No matter how many times one showers, it all just seems futile and you always have smelly armpits. Even though deodorants help to a great extent and make one stink less throughout the day, they are still not a permanent solution for smelly armpits. Ones looking for natural treatments for smelly armpits should go through the following article right away!

What Causes Smelly Armpits or Underarm Odour?

Like body odour, underarm odour is also primarily linked to the apocrine glands, which are found in the ears, nipples, breasts, genital area, and armpits. While these glands are responsible for the secretion of earwax in the ears, and milk in the breasts, they also help in the production of sweat in the nipples, genital area, and underarms. The sweat produced by these glands is actually responsible for causing odour. This odour can at times be foul-smelling because of bacteria breaking down the protein-rich sweat. The problem of smelly armpits is usually experienced by people who wear synthetic clothing, eat a diet rich in smelly foods like garlic and onion, suffer from medical conditions like diabetes and hyperhidrosis, or have more sweat glands.

6 Natural Treatments for Smelly Armpits

Whatever be the cause of the smelly underarms, one can get rid of the problem naturally by maintaining personal hygiene and using the below mentioned simple home treatment for smelly armpits:

Apple Cider Vinegar for Treating Smelly Armpits

The acidic nature and the antimicrobial properties of apple cider vinegar help to neutralize the environment in the armpit area and naturally destroy the odour-causing bacteria. Regular use of apple cider vinegar can also aid in preventing the accumulation of bacteria in the armpits and hence prevent smelly armpits. A cotton ball should be properly dipped in apple cider vinegar and then gently rubbed on the underarms. This natural treatment should be used twice daily, i.e. in the morning after a bath, and at night before going to bed to get rid of smelly armpits.

Iodine for Treating Smelly Armpits

Iodine helps in sterilizing the armpits and restoring their pH with its antiseptic properties. This natural treatment can relieve the problem of foul-smelling underarms over time. To remove the foul odour from the armpits, a few drops of iodine should be applied on both the underarms and scrubbed gently using a soft brush. The mixture should be left on for around 3 minutes after scrubbing and then washed off with water. This natural treatment can be followed once every day to deal with the problem of smelly armpits.

Essential Oils for Treating Smelly Armpits

Some essential oils which help to disinfect the underarms and get rid of the bad armpit odour are:

Lavender Oil: Lavender oil is used to treat many skin and health issues. The antibacterial properties of this essential oil helps to kill the bacteria present in the underarms, while its pleasant fragrance helps to mask the foul underarm odour. About 4-5 drops of lavender essential oil should be added in a glass of water. This solution should then be poured into a spray bottle and sprayed directly on the underarms. Alternatively, lavender oil can also be mixed with any carrier oil and applied on the armpits. This natural treatment of essential oils can be used twice daily to naturally treat smelly armpits.

Tea Tree Oil: Tea tree oil is one of the most effective natural treatments for combating underarm odour or smelly armpits. The astringent and antimicrobial properties of this essential oil help to minimize the pores in the underarms and eliminate odour-causing bacteria from the area. About 2 drops tea tree oil should be combined with 2 tbsp water and this mixture should then be applied on both the armpits with a cotton pad. Alternatively, a few drops of tea tree oil can also be added into a bottle of water and then used as a spray for the armpits. These natural treatments can be used twice daily for combating smelly armpits.

Witch Hazel Oil: Witch hazel is known for its antiperspirant nature and is a great natural treatment for smelly armpits. Baking soda helps to keep the underarms dry and sweat-free. The antibacterial properties of baking soda aid in killing the bacteria which cause the foul smell in the armpits. Take 1 tbsp of baking soda and 1 tbsp of lemon juice and mix them together. Apply this paste directly on the underarms and leave for 2 to 3 minutes before taking a shower. This remedy should be used once a day for a few weeks to naturally treat smelly armpits.

Lemon is known for its powerful antibacterial properties. Lemon is highly acidic in nature and thus helps to reduce the pH of the skin for making it uninhabitable for odour- causing bacteria. To get rid of smelly armpits, half-a-lemon should be rubbed directly on the underarms. The lemon juice should be left on until it dries and then rinsed off with water. People with sensitive skin should apply a mix of the juice of half-a-lemon with half-cup water in the underarms using a cotton ball. This natural remedy should be used once a day until any improvement is noticed in the smelly armpits.
