Mood disorders are the common diseases of mind that affect mental well being and function. These disorders lead to inappropriate reactions to normal circumstances. The patient is indulged in negative thoughts. He may develop a feeling of sadness, emptiness, depression, anxiety, and unhappiness. Depression, bipolar disorder, and persistent depressive disorder are some of the types of mood disorders. Their causes are not clear. Their symptoms involve low self-esteem, low concentration, mood swings, low appetite, destructive thoughts, and many more. They may lead to serious incidences like self-destruction or suicide. They can be treated with talk therapies, antipsychotic drugs, etc.

Mood disorders are common but serious disorders that need treatment. It does not go on its own. It can lead to serious consequences such as self-destruction and suicidal tendencies. The treatment aims to deal with such mental issues, restore the brains chemistry and improve one’s ability to cope up with stress in day to day life. There are certain factors that can influence the treatment such as-

  • Health and age of the patient
  • The past medical and family history
  • The type of mood disorder present in the patient
  • Tolerances and intolerances of the patient towards the medicines prescribed
  • Family support

The methods by which mood disorders can be fixed are-

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy– it is a therapy to fix mood disorders in which psychotherapists use both behavioral and cognitive theories in a single method. Its main focus is on the actions and behaviors of the patient. This therapy deals with distorted thoughts and self-defeating thought patterns. In this therapy, the therapists implant positive healthy thoughts in the patients in place of negative thoughts. By this therapy, the patient is able to recognize his unhealthy thoughts such as black and white thinking patterns, a wrong assumption of worst in a normal situation, exaggeration of circumstances, a negative generalization of all situations, etc. This therapy is extremely useful in cases of depression and anxiety. This therapy helps to overcome fear and inappropriate beliefs of life.

Antipsychotic Drugs– medicines such as antipsychotic drugs and mood stabilizers are prescribed to fix mood disorders. They are extremely essential in the management of severe mood disorders such as bipolar disorders. The patient may be hospitalized in case patient shows dangerous antipsychotic behaviors. These medicines quickly calm down the symptoms of mood disorders.

Electroconvulsive Therapy– electroconvulsive therapy is a therapy to fix mood disorders that uses electrical stimulation to rectify the impaired brain circuits. It is useful for patients who have major depression and suicidal tendencies. Modern techniques are relatively safer and effective to rectify improper brain functioning than past techniques.

Natural Supplements– natural supplements like omega-3 fatty acids, St. John’s wart etc. have properties to enhance the functioning of the brain without side effects. Research studies have shown that these supplements help in the improvement of one’s mood, stabilization of emotions and reduction of anxiety in many patients.

Alternative Health Practices– this involves deep breathing exercises, yoga, meditation, acupuncture, and qi-gong. This pacifies the mind. The patient becomes calmer and focused. He also feels mentally balanced. This methods help in the reduction of stress and enhances his coping abilities with them.

Mood disorders are the disorders of mind that create imbalances between one’s thoughts and reaction in normal circumstances. The affected person cannot become happy in a normal happy situation. Instead, he feels sad and gloomy in that situation or vice versa. In many cases, the affected people experience intense mood changes. This incoordination of mind can develop at any age. Its causes are unclear. It develops more in women than men.


Mood disorders are serious disorders of mind that may lead to self-destruction and suicidal tendencies. This disorder must be treated in time to prevent any causality or loss of life. Mood disorders can be fixed with cognitive behavioral therapy, antipsychotic medicines, and others discussed above.
