Mono or infectious mononucleosis is a disease that is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus. It is mostly transmitted through the saliva but can also spread by sharing food and utensils with the affected person. It is also known as the kissing disease because it mostly spreads through direct contact with the person’s saliva. It is most commonly found in adolescents and young adults. The virus can remain dormant or inactive (without any symptoms) in a person but can be transferred to a healthy person and present with symptoms. People with low or weak immunity are more likely to contract the virus.

The symptoms of mononucleosis usually present after 2-6 weeks of coming in contact with the virus. It is therefore not possible to know about the infection on time as the virus has already established in the body. The common symptoms include low to high grade fever with chills, sore throat and muscles with body ache, enlargement of lymph nodes, easy fatigability, enlarged tonsils, decreased appetite and increase in size of spleen leading to pain in upper left quadrant of abdomen.
