Neuropathy is the term given to a condition referring to damage to the nerves. In majority of the cases, it is the peripheral nerve that gets damaged and hence it is also known by the name of peripheral neuropathy. The symptoms of neuropathy will depend on the nerve that is damaged whether it is motor nerves, sensory nerves, or autonomic nerves. The peripheral nervous system connects the brain and spinal cord to various parts of the body including the hands, feet, and the face. An individual with peripheral neuropathy may experience a perception of pain when there may be no cause for development of pain and vice versa.

There may be numerous causes for development of neuropathy including systemic illness like diabetes, and inherited disorder, infections, or radiation done to treat certain forms of cancer. Certain surgical procedures may also accidentally damage the peripheral nerves resulting in neuropathy.

While there are many treatments available for neuropathy, there are also certain natural remedies which are extremely effective when it comes to treating neuropathy.

Alpha Lipoic Acid: This is an excellent natural remedy for neuropathy. It is a natural acid that is produced by the cells in the body. Alpha Lipoic Acid converts glucose into energy. It is also an extremely effective antioxidant. Foods rich in alpha lipoic acid are broccoli, peas, rice bran, and potatoes.

Mustard Oil: This oil has been recommended as one of the most potent natural remedy to treat neuropathy. Mustard oil stimulates the nerves and improves their function. The patient needs to rub the affected area with mustard oil until all of the oil is absorbed into the skin. The heat generated by the oil improves blood flow to the nerves and thus improve their functionality.

Nuts: Nuts are extremely rich in biotin. Biotin is extremely useful in treating neuropathy pain, especially in diabetics. It keeps the blood sugar levels under control and prevents further damage to the nerves. Walnuts and almonds are best nuts that an individual can have to treat neuropathy pain.

Primrose Oil: Primrose oil is used for treatment of various ailments including neuropathy. This oil is extremely rich in omega 3 and fatty acids which helps in treating neuropathy pain. Primrose oil is available in pill form and needs to be taken internally. Recommended dose is 360 mg per day for adequate treatment of neuropathy. In most of the cases Primrose oil is safe to use; however, it comes with a side effect profile of rare stomach pain, nausea, and headaches. Additionally, individuals with seizure disorder should avoid taking primrose oil. This oil also needs to be avoided in pregnant females.

Cinnamon: This is also an extremely potent natural remedy to treat neuropathy. Cinnamon helps in reducing blood glucose levels and thus prevents development of symptoms of neuropathy. Cinnamon can be added in daily food for best relief from neuropathy.

Vitamin B12: This is also an effective remedy for treatment of neuropathy. Vitamin B12 deficiency is one of the causes of neuropathy. Foods rich in vitamin B12 are red meat, fish, and eggs. One can also have vitamin B12 supplements if they cannot eat the above mentioned foods or are vegetarians to treat the symptoms of neuropathy.
